Proper Nouns and Johnny Appleseed
Kimberlee Fulbright
Cooperative Group Lesson
Reading: 2nd grade
Essential Question: What is a proper noun?
Behavioral Objective: With assistance from the teacher (condition), a pair of students (audience) will be able to work together to design a playbill writing 15/15 proper nouns (degree) in the playbill they design (behavior). ***see rubric for grading*** (must score 34/48 points)
QCC Standard: LA.2.27—identifies the main characters. LA.2.31-- demonstrates comprehension when reading a variety of literary forms (drama). LA.2.40—writes a minimum of three sentences about a topic.
Materials:
- Sample copy of the playbill to show what I am looking for.
- Rubric with expectations
- Felt board pieces and board
- Graphic Organizer (Wanted)
- Crayons
Opening/Attention Getter:
We will read together the Johnny Appleseed dramatic play in the book. As we read the story, I will put up felt pieces that fit the story. This is my attention getter, as well as a visual for the children to picture the story. After the story, we will talk about what happened in the story (briefly). I will then get into the lesson by teaching about pronouns. (I will have the EQ posted on the board before the lesson). I will show them several examples of proper nouns using the days of the week and other names. I will allow the students a chance to come up for practice.
Grouping:
The class is comprised of mostly females. I will group heterogeneously as possible. I will then group based upon ability levels. I will place one middle student with a lower student, and a higher student with a middle student as possible.
Activity Appropriate:
This activity is appropriate for a group activity because the students have one set of materials to work with. They will also be turning in one product for evaluation.
Discussion:
The students will discuss and agree upon how to design the playbill, and what Proper nouns to use.
Application:
After discussing and agreeing on the design and proper nouns, the students will use their rubric to complete their playbill. (With my assistance)
Share/Debriefing/Identifying: (will also be the Review and Closing):
The teacher will call up each group individually. The students will take turns showing their playbill to the class. They will tell what proper nouns they used as well.
Assessment:
Without assistance from the teacher (condition), a pair of students (audience) will be able to work together to design a playbill writing 15/15 proper nouns (degree) in the playbill they design (behavior). ***see rubric for grading*** (must score 34/48 points)
