Before Wednesday's semifinal against No. 1 seeded Salpointe Catholic, Sierra Vista Buena coach Mozelle Williams said his team would need to contain Lancers guard Wynona Peters. "If we can cut the head off the snake, then we've got a chance to beat Salpointe," he said before the game. "I love to see athletes like that play, but just not against my team." It took less than a minute for his plan to unravel in the Lancers' 57-43 win in the 5A Southern Regional tournament on Wednesday at Flowing Wells. Salpointe's opponent in Friday's final will be decided in tonight's Tucson-Flowing Wells semifinal at Flowing Wells at 7 p.m. The final will be Friday at 5 p.m. at Flowing Wells.

On the Lancers' opening possession, Peters snagged a missed Buena shot and found Michelle Felix open down court for an easy fast-break bucket. It spurred an 8-1 run that gave the Lancers a lead they never relinquished. Peters finished with a double-double, scoring a team-high 11 points and handing out 10 assists. Felix finished with nine points. "I like to share the ball," said Peters. "I can shoot and all that, but I just like to get my other teammates a chance to score."

The Lancers' Stephanie Segura finished with 10 points, and Anna Naumovitz had nine. Buena sophomore Samoana Ingram kept the Colts alive early by scoring eight points in the first quarter. She led all scorers with 24 points.

Ingram was benched in the middle of the second quarter after getting called for her second foul, and Salpointe (21-6) capitalized on her absence, building an 11-2 run.

Peters capped the half with a three-pointer in the final minute that gave her team a 33-21 lead. In the third quarter, Salpointe used a dominant 2-3 defense to keep the Colts' offense and dreams of a comeback at bay. The Lancers held Buena to only five points in the quarter. "The 2-3 is something that we run pretty well. It's our strength and we're going to stick with it," said Salpointe coach Scott Moushon.

Peters and center Brigette Walters connected on a pair of fast-break baskets in the quarter that helped their team build a 19-point lead that secured their victory and eliminated the Colts from advancing. Buena's Ny Green led a surge in the final quarter, sinking three shots from beyond the arc for nine points. It led a 17-point quarter for No. 4 seeded Buena (15-9), but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lancers.
