About the Science Department

The Science department is seeking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic Subject Leader for Physics. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Science and Physics up to GCSE level and Physics at A Level. This post has risen due to the promotion of the previous post holder and will offer significant opportunities for professional development to the right candidate.

The science department at Hutton Grammar School is situated on the first floor of the Main Block and has seven teaching laboratories, one preparation room, an ICT learning resource centre which is also used as a teaching class room and a Science staff workroom. The majority of the labs have recently been refurbished and this has created some very modern teaching laboratories with excellent ICT facilities.

The department has seven full time and two part-time teachers. From September 2013, the Subject Leader for Science will be leader of the Chemistry curriculum and will be assisted in the running of the department by the Subject Leader for Biology and the Subject Leader for Physics. Each of these individuals will be responsible for co-ordinating the science curriculum at a Key Stage.

Since September 2011, Key Stage 3 Science has been taught in thematic units following the Go Sciences scheme of work and focuses on the delivery of investigative and safety skills. This focus on general Science is having a positive impact on our Year 7 and 8 students. In Year 9, students study the three science disciplines once a week with emphasis on their future GCSE studies and focus on ISA preparation.

In Year 10 and 11 the department offers two options to students. The separate science groups receive twelve hours of science a fortnight in total. The second option comprises of Core Science qualification in Year 10 and an Additional Science qualification in Year 11. The students have a total of eight hours of science a fortnight in Year 10 and ten hours in Year 11.
