John Perry Primary ASD ARP
John Perry is a 12 place additional resource provision attached to the main stream school. All pupils placed in the ARP will have an EHCP or statement and normally a diagnosis of autism ASD often with some learning difficulties.
The 12 places range from reception to Year 6. There are 12 places in total not 12 per year group.
Children are placed in the ARP by the LEA after consultation with parents and professionals via PANEL. The SENART /EHCP team support parents through this process.
Children are unable to gain an ARP place through a place in John Perry main stream. The above process always applies.
Children are presently taught in 2 separate classes joined by a shared indoor area. The children may be separated by age or needs. At present the children are separated by need.
Children within the ARP follow the National curriculum adapted as needed.
Children will be assessed on arrival to find a Baseline and are assessed termly and their progress monitored closely by both the school and the LEA.
There will be termly meeting with parents to discuss progress and an Annual review of the EHCP normally in February / March.
The ARP aim to integrate children into the main stream classes wherever possible. This will depend on the individual child’s ability and how they are able to cope in a main stream class. Children will always be accompanied by a member of the ARP staff. Each child’s integration time table will look different.
The ARP follows strict daily routines and each child will have a work station and schedule to help follow daily routines.
The ARP uses a structured teaching system based on TEACCH. The ARP maintains strong links with other borough ARPs and special schools.
Some of the ARP pupils are non-verbal and therefore other means of communication are also used these include Makaton, PECs, gestures etc.
Some of the children in the ARP still require nappies, how this is dealt with will be agreed with parents prior to admission. (No child is refused admission due to this.)
Some of the children are fussy eater, how this will be dealt with will be agreed with parents.
The ARP normally has fortnightly visits from a SLT (at present we are waiting for a new SLT to be allocated)
The ARP has a dedicated Educational Psychologist who attends the ARP to consult and advise at least X2 a term and will conduct home visits.
The LEA will provide escorted transport with certain parameters’.
John Perry School has a swimming pool and ARP children swim weekly Sept –Dec / April – July depending on the weather.
