About the Award

The TASA Postgraduate Conference Scholarship Fund (PCSF) was established in 2003 with funds donated by the former Australian Association of Social Research Inc. The scholarships aim to support postgraduate participation at TASA annual conferences. The TASA Executive would like to encourage postgraduate members to apply and also academic supervisors to encourage their students to apply for the 2017 conference.

The Prize

The recipient of the prize will receive:

  • Registration for the 2017 conference(not transferrable to future conferences);
  • Registration for the 2017 pre-conference TASA Postgraduate Workshop (not transferrable to future conferences);
  • A TASA PCSF certificate; and
  • Travel funding for 2017 scholarship recipients who reside in Vic, Qld, NSW, SA, Tas,NT & ACT as well as regional WA (up to $600 per scholarship).

Eligibility Criteria

Those eligible for consideration of the scholarship mustmeet the following criteria:

  • Applicant is currently enrolled in aHonours, Masters or PhD program
  • Applicant has submitted a sole-authoredrefereed conference paper by the Conference submission date that has been reviewed and accepted for publication in the refereed conference proceedings. The selection committee will request a copy of the paper and referee reports from the Conference Organisers.
  • Applicant has not previously been a recipient of the award
  • Applicant is a financial TASA member as at the closing date for scholarship applications
  • Applicant agrees to submit a brief report on their conference experience and what receiving the scholarship meant to their studies,, to be published in Nexus/TASA blog, if awarded a scholarship

The following Selection Criteria will be taken into consideration:

Quality and relevance of conference paper to the theme of that year’s conference / 30 points
Location/distance from conference venue / 30 points
Financial Hardship / 20 points
Care responsibilities (where this impacts on capacity to pay for conference attendance) / 10 points
Commitment to TASA (eg years of membership) / 10 points

Each year the scholarship winner with the best paper in the research area of migration or cultural pluralism, or with the potential for contribution to public policy, will be recognised as the winner of the Jerzy Zubrzycki Postgraduate Conference Scholarship.

Selection Panel

Selection panel will normally consist of the Vice President (Conference Convenor) and the Postgraduate Portfolio Leader.

Application Procedure

  • Nominations must be made on this official nomination form and submitted, electronically, to by September 11th, 2017
  • Papers must be submitted to the refereed proceedings by the deadlines set by the Conference Local Organising Committee (LOC). Please make sure you double check this date on the TASA Conference website in case the deadline is brought forward.
  • Applications will be reviewed by TASA Executive sub-committee
  • Up to five scholarships may be awarded each year
  • Applicants will be notified of the outcome in enough time for those nominees who were not successful to still register for the conference at the ‘Early Bird’ rate (around early October).
  • The decision of the review panel is final and no further discussions will be entered into.
  • Postgraduate conference scholarship winners will have the payment of their conference registration made by the TASA Office.
  • Postgraduate conference scholarship winners will also be reimbursed for travel costs up to the value set based on their location.Travel funding for 2017,will be up to $600 per scholarship, for those applicants who reside in Vic, Qld, NSW, SA, Tas,NT & ACT as well as regional WAOne claim may be made for each scholarship winner and must include receipts. Expenses may be claimed before or soon after the conference, as long as receipts are provided for all expenses. Please note: you will need to take out travel insurance (usually around $18) if you would like to be reimbursed before the conference.You can include the cost of travel insurance in your claim. Applicant checklist

I am a current Honours, Masters or PhD postgraduate student.

I am a current financial member of TASA.

I have submitted a sole authored paper for inclusion in the TASA 2017 refereed proceedings via the normal online submission process for all conference papers: TASA will seek confirmation of acceptance of your paper from the conference organisers.
