Getting Started

Welcome to the MEDITECH Blood Bank Module. Laboratories face pressure to perform tests and procedures accurately, report results quickly, and contain costs. MEDITECHs Blood Bank Module helps hospitals meet these challenges by allowing technologists to enter patient information, order tests, and report results efficiently.

What is a Tutorial?

A tutorial is a series of steps that guide you through the basic functions of a software module. This Quick Start introduces you to the important features of the Blood Bank Module without overwhelming you with advanced procedures or elaborate explanations.

After completing this tutorial, you will be able to:

Enter units into inventory

Enter a requisition

Enter patient results

Issue blood units

Enter transfusion information

View a unit inquiry

Signing onto the MEDITECH System

To work with the Blood Bank Module, you must first sign on.

1. Sign onto CUS1 Ring

2. Type Username: LAB.QUICK

3. Type Password: 1234

4. The TRNLAB55 will default into the HCIS field

5. Type LAB at the >1

6. The LIS (Laboratory Information System) Main Menu appears. From the main menu

you can reach every routine in the LIS modules.

Exercise 1 - Enter an Inventory Unit

The Enter Units Routine allows you to:

Enter unique products with specific instructions

You must enter Blood Bank products into the Blood Bank Module inventory. The Enter Units Routine enables you to enter unique products with specific instructions relating to the products use (autologous or donor directed). Users enter non-unique products, such as Rhogam, into the inventory through the Enter Lots routine.

This exercise demonstrates how to enter units into inventory. To access this routine, follow the pathway below:

Begin at the LIS Main Menu

Select BLOOD BANK

The Blood Bank Main Menu appears

Select the UNITS menu

The Blood Bank Unit Menu appears

Select the UNIT ENTRY menu

The Blood Bank Unit Entry Menu appears

Select ENTER UNIT.

Complete the fields that appear on the screen with the responses listed below.

Screen Prompt / Your Response
RECEIVED DATE / Type T for Today. Press <ENTER>.
TIME / The current time defaults. Press <ENTER>.
UNIT SOURCE / Type ARC, press <ENTER>.
PRODUCT / Type PC (packed cells), press <ENTER>.
VOLUME / Press <ENTER> to accept the default.
WL FUNC / Press <ENTER>.
SOURCE BLOOD TYPE / Type OP (O Positive), press <ENTER>.
BLOOD TYPE / This field can be skipped based on the Blood Type Dictionary setup.
BBK UNIT NUMBER / Type a UNIQUE number of at least 5
digits, Press <ENTER>.
COLLECTION DATE / Press <ENTER>.
EXPIRATION DATE / Type T+40 Press <ENTER>.
TIME / Press <ENTER> to accept default of 2359. Notice the Collection Date and Time default in, calculated from the expiration
date and time.date and time.
SEGMENT NUMBER / Press <ENTER>.
UNIT LOCATION / Press <ENTER> to accept default.
CARD PRINTER / Press <ENTER>.
DONOR / Press <ENTER>.
RESERVED / Press <ENTER>.
ANTIGENS / Press <ENTER>.
ANTIBODIES / Press <ENTER>.
MARKERS / Press <ENTER>.
E/E OTHER / Press <ENTER>.
E/E COMMENTS / Press <ENTER>.
To File / Press F12. Press <ENTER> to accept Yes

The module now has a unit in the inventory with a status of ENTERED. A Retype has automatically been ordered and a specimen number has been created for this unit. Record the Req, Spec, and Unit numbers for this product.

Press <ESC> until you get to the LIS Main Menu.

Exercise 2 - Entering a Requisition

The Enter / Edit Requisition routine allows you to:

Enter Patient Orders

Create specimens

Patient orders are typically entered in the Order Entry Module for inpatients and directly into the Lab module for outpatients.

This exercise demonstrates how to enter patient orders. To access this routine, follow the pathway below:

Select the REQUISITIONS icon

The LIS Requisition Menu appears

Select the Enter/Edit REQUISITION option

The LIS Enter/Edit Requisition screen appears

Answer the screen prompts with the responses listed below:

Screen Prompt / Your Response
PATIENT / Select a patient using a partial name lookup with the <LASTNAME,FIRSTNAME> <F9> convention. A Patient lookup appears with your name on it. Select a patient. Press <ENTER>.
Note: If you selected an old outpatient account you will receive the message "This patient was registered T-x. Continue?" ENTER Y for Yes.
REQ # / Press <ENTER>. You are creating a new requisition, so the Blood Bank Module assigns a new number and NEW appears in the response field.
COLL DATE / The default response is T for today. Press <ENTER> to accept it.
COLL TIME / Type N for the present time. Press <ENTER>.
PRIORITY / To accept the default response of R for routine, Press <ENTER>.
ORDER SOURCE / To accept the default reponse of W for written, Press <ENTER>.
RECEIVED? / Delete the N, replace with Y. Press <ENTER> to accept it.
COLL BY / Type in a user name. You will be prompted
with <Not Found. New?> if the user is not defined. Select Yes.
RECV DATE / Press <ENTER> to accept default of today.
RECV TIME / Press <ENTER>.
RECV BY / Press <ENTER>.
WORKLOAD FUNCTION / Press <ENTER>.
LABEL DEVICE / Press <ENTER>.
WORKCARD DEV / Press <ENTER>.
ALIQUOT DEV / Press <ENTER>.
COMMENTS? / To accept the default of No, press <ENTER>. Later you will learn how to enter comments here.
MARKERS / Press <ENTER>
CALL / Press <ENTER>.
BROADCAST / Press <ENTER>.
ORDER / Type PC. The most recent H&H results for the patient will appear. If there are no results available you will see the message, "No results available." Press <F12> to acknowledge the message.
CT / Press <ENTER> to accept default of 2.
ORDER / TS and XM tests will default as associated tests. Press <ENTER>. A TS may not be ordered if already ordered for that patient within 72 hrs. If a TS does not show up, manually add it to the requisition and also give a reason for duplicate ordering.
EDIT PX / Press <F12> to file.
FILE / Press <ENTER> to accept the Y. You may be asked for a Wristband Number to be entered. Based on setup, it may be required in order to receive the specimen.

Requisition and Blood Bank specimen numbers appear on the screen like this:

Exercise 3 - Entering Results

The Result Entry Routine allows you to:

Enter Blood Bank patient and unit results into the LIS.

To access this routine, follow the pathway below:

Select BLOOD BANK

The BBK main menu displays

Select the RESULTS ENTRY

The Blood Bank RESULTS ENTRY menu appears

Select ENTER/EDIT results.

Screen Prompt / Your Response
SPEC / Type BU# followed by the number of the unit you entered into inventory.
A series of tests display. Enter the results as follows:
ANTI-A / 0 (zero)
ANTI-B / 0 (zero)
ANTI-AB / 0 (zero)
ANTI-D / 4
D CONTROL / 2
BLOOD TYPE / OP
VERIFYING OPTIONS SCREEN / Press F12 to the verifying options screen. Select "Verify All" and press <Ok> to save the results of the unit retype.
SPEC / Enter patient's name, from exercise 2 and
press <ENTER>. Select that patient, and
then the relevant order. If there is only one
specimen for the patient, it will
automatically default in.
MESSAGE SCREEN / A message screen may pop up with
comments, queries, and markers from the
requisition, press <F12> to acknowledge
the message.
MESSAGE SCREEN / The most recent H&H results for the
patient will appear. If there are no results
available you will see the message, "No
results available." Press <F12> to
acknowledge the message.
A series of tests display. Enter these results:
ANTI-A / 0
ANTI-B / 0
ANTI-AB / 0
ANTI-D / 4
D CONTROL / 0
A CELL / 1
B CELL / 1
BLOOD TYPE / OP
Type \FV after the OP and Press <ENTER>.
Important: Make sure you record the blood type as OP\FV. This will file and verify the blood type.
ANTIBODY SCREEN / Press the CTRL key and the RIGHT Arrow key. This will open another result screen. Answer each of the Antibody screen tests as 0. NEGATIVE will default in as the INTERPRETATION. Press <F12>.
PACKED CELLS / Type in the unit number of the unit you entered into inventory and retyped.
A Product Status screen displays all information about the unit. / OK? Select Y.
CROSSMATCH RESULT SCREEN / A result entry screen displays to enter the crossmatch results. Enter all results as 0. Enter Y for COMPATIBLE and Press <F12>.
At this time the module marks the unit as COMPATIBLE (Comp? Y) in the REFERENCE field. / Press F12.
FILING OPTIONS SCREEN / Select VERIFY ALL RESULTS prompt to verify all results and file. Press <OK>.

Press <ESC> until you are returned to the LIS Main Menu.

EXERCISE 4 - Issuing a Unit

The Issue Units Routine allows you to:

Document the issuing process

Record relevant information

To access this routine, follow the pathway below:

Select BLOOD BANK.

The Blood Bank main menu appears.

Select the RESULTS ENTRY menu

The BBK Results Entry menu appears.

Select the ISSUE UNITS routine.

The Issue Units main menu appears.

Select ISSUE.

Complete the prompts with the responses below:

SPEC / Enter the specimen number you recorded earlier, or if you did not sign off of the system, you can use the <SPACEBAR> <ENTER> convention to recall the last patient.
The Crossmatched/Assigned Units screen displays the units available for this Specimen. / After you view this information, press <Esc>.
UNIT / The unit(s) you crossmatched then appear on your screen.
ISS / Type Y, then press <ENTER> twice.
ISSUE DATE / To accept today, press <ENTER>.
TIME / To accept now, press <ENTER>.
BY / To accept the default result user, press <ENTER>.
MESSENGER / Type NURSE for the person who picked up the unit of blood.
WKLD FUNC / Press <ENTER>.
CARD PRINTER / Press <ENTER>.
UNIT LOCATION / Press <ENTER>.
UNIT ISSUE COMMENTS / Enter the comment: Issued with filter. Press <F12> to File.
ISSUE? / Type Y. A Pop-up Box displays stating: “An issue charge has been added.” Press <ESC>.
ENTER TRANSFUSION DATA / Type N. Press <ENTER>.

Press <ESC> until you return to the Blood Bank Main Menu.

The unit is now at a status of ISSUED.

EXERCISE 5 - Enter Transfusion Data

The Enter/Edit Transfusion Data routine allows you to:

Record a blood units transfusion info

To access this routine, follow the pathway below:

Select BLOOD BANK.

The Blood Bank main menu appears.

Select RESULT ENTRY.

The result entry menu appears.

Select TRANSFUSE UNITS.

The transfuse units main menu appears.

Select ENTER/EDIT TRANSFUSION DATA Routine.

Complete the prompts with the responses below.

Screen Prompt / Your Response
SPEC / Press <.> <ENTER> to recall the last specimen.
DATE / To record today’s date, type T, press <ENTER>.
VOLUME / To accept the default, press <ENTER>
BEG / Type 1730, press <ENTER>.
END / Type 1800, press <ENTER>.
BY / Type LAB.TRAIN, press <ENTER>.
WKLD FUNC / Press <ENTER>.
FILE / Press <F12> to File transfusion data.
TRANSFUSE? / Select Y.

Issue Comments will file as Transfusion comments based upon a parameter setting.

Press <ESC> until you return to the Blood Bank Main Menu

EXERCISE 6 - Unit Inquiry

The Unit Inquiry routine allows you to:

View all information specific to the unit (history and dates).

See associated specimens, patients, and issue and transfuse data.

Printout a Unit Inquiry to keep on file.

To access this routine, follow the pathway below:

Select BLOOD BANK.

The Blood Bank main menu appears.

Select UNITS.

The BBK Units Menu appears.

Select INQUIRY Routine.

The UNIT INQUIRY Routine appears.

Complete the prompts with the responses below.

Screen Prompt / Your Response
UNIT / Type in your unit number. Press <ENTER>. All the unit information will appear.
DATA CATEGORY / <CTRL> <RIGHT ARROW> into each Data Category to view appropriate information. At the Bottom of the screen, Press F12.
PRINT ON / Select VIEW. Review information and Press <ESC>.

Press <ESC> to exit the inquiry routine.

Press <ESC> until you return to the Blood Bank Main Menu
