Farrington Contest and Awards

Farrington Awards are given by HATFL each year in honor of Curtis Farrington, an original founder and the first president of HATFL. These awards are funded from contributions, entry fees, and membership dues. HATFL is presenting the Farrington Awards on January 30th, the same day of testing, to outstanding students in all languages and levels tested.

Languages and Levels:

  • French, German, and Latin: Levels I, II, III and Advanced:No Heritage Speaker may test in these languages in any level.
  • ASL: Levels I, II, and III. ASL testing begins early at 7:30 (Check-in time 7:00)
  • Spanish (non-native.): Levels I, II, III,and Advanced
  • Spanish Heritage Speakers: Intermediate and Advanced
  • Any language not having enough entrants will be cancelled and teachers notified in advance.

No students who hold outside experience or heritage learners may be registeredfor levels I or II.Outside experience is defined as any student who has lived or studied for any length of time in an environment where the target language is spoken. When in doubt contact the language representative on the next page. Heritage Speakers are those students who have been exposed at some level to the language in their home environment.

Schedule:

8:30-9:00Arrival and Room Assignments (ASL begins at 7:00 arrival and 7:30 testing)

9:00-10:00Multiple Choice Exam in Designated Classrooms

10:00 – 10:30Break

10:30 – 11:30Oral Contest for finalists in Designated Classrooms

How To Enter Students In The 2017Farrington Awards:

  • Each campus can enter up to three (3) STUDENTS PER LANGUAGE PER LEVEL
  • Students must be in the appropriate level of the language or they must have just completed the level.
  • Entry fee for each student must accompany the 2017 Farrington Contest Entry form (See attachment).
  • Deadline for Registration ($5 per student) for the2017 Farrington Awards is January 20th. No onsite registration. Entry forms and fees must be postmarked by these date or they will not be accepted.Checks are to be made payable to HATFL.
  • Teachers who enter students into the Farrington Contest must be a current 2016-2017HATFL member or submit a$10.00 Farrington participation fee.

Format For The Farrington Contest:

Multiple Choice Exam: The multiple choice exam will be given first to all entrants and will be limited to one hour. All students will be asked to complete a writing portion which will be used only for breaking ties. All students will receive participation certificates at this time. Top scoring students will be requested to remain for the speaking portion.

  • Oral Exam: Students competing for the Farrington awards should be prepared to speak about general topics related to course objectives for the test they are taking. Advanced level tests will include the use of past and future tenses in discussing cultural comparisons and contrasts. All students who qualify for the oral exam will receive semi-finalist certificates.

Awards Ceremony:

All students who participate in the Farrington contest will receive a certificate of participation from the proctor administering their written exam. All students who qualify as Finalists will receive a medal recognizing that accomplishment. These medals will be handed out during the awards ceremony.

The awards ceremony will take place immediately following the oral testing and the reception, close to 12:00 noon. Students placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rdin each category will receive a certificate and amedal recognizing that accomplishment. The two remaining finalists will receive Honorable Mention medals and certificates.
