Entrance Antiphon

O sing a new song to the Lord; sing to the Lord, all the earth. In his presence are majesty and splendour, strength and honour in his holy place.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 19

Your words, O Lord, are Spirit and Life.

The law of the Lord is perfect;
it revives the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are steadfast;
they give wisdom to the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right;
they gladden the heart.

The command of the Lord is clear;
it gives light to the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is pure,
abiding forever,

The judgements of the Lord are true;
they are, all of them, just.

May the spoken words of my mouth,
the thoughts of my heart,
win favour in your sight, O Lord,
my rock and my redeemer.

Your words, O Lord, are Spirit and Life.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!

The Lord has sent me to preach good news to the poor,
to proclaim release to the captives. Alleluia!

Communion Antiphon

Look towards the Lord and be radiant; let your faces not be abashed.

CATECHISM 2013

As we finalise the classes, catechists, venues and times for all classes from Grade 1 to Grade 12, we wish to remind all parents of the importance of on-going religious instruction for all children ~ not just those in preparation for the Sacraments of the Church. In fact, certain basic formation and instruction is required before preparation for specific Sacraments can commence. To this end we wish to inform parents of those in High School, in particular, that we can no longer accept candidates into the Year One Grade 11 Confirmation Class who have had no prior catechetical instruction. We will have to run a special ‘catch-up’ programme on the basics of faith for those who have not been regular at catechism in the past.

GOLDEN JUBILEE PRAYER

We thank you God our Father for the many graces and blessings

you have bestowed upon our parish.

In this Jubilee Year we thank you most especially for our beautiful church

and for the many sacred celebrations here through which your Divine Presence

has been revealed to us and has guided our lives.

Bless us, the living stones of our Church, and guide us as we grow in faith

and lead others to faith.

May the living presence of Jesus, celebrated every day in Holy Mass, strengthen us.

May the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit help us and guide us

and be the source of our unity and peace.Amen.

Our Lady of Fatima pray for us.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

How can you help the Saint Vincent de Paul Society

There are many ways in which you can help The St. Vincent de Paul Society at Our Lady of Fatima Parish. You too can be inspired by the compassion of Jesus Christ and donate the following: non-perishable food (tinned beans, tinned fish, maize meal, soup) brought to Mass every Sunday, clothes or blankets for our projects in Estcourt & Bergville, instant soup for our project at Ray Hulett House and second hand items to be sold at our stall at the Golden Hours market to raise money to feed the poor.

Your contribution can be extended in the following ways: supporting the St. Vincent de Paul Society at fundraising events, remember the St. Vincent de Paul Society when drawing up your will and you could also consider joining and contributing to the Society’s work.

Remember to keep the following people in your prayers: the poor, the aged, the unemployed, people with AIDS and for abused women and children.

God loves a cheerful giver and there’s no better way to store up your riches in heaven than making the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at Our Lady of Fatima parish your Charity of Choice.

The Society is constrained by the lack of resources. All resources of the Society are used exclusively to help the poor and the needy and you can make a difference in somebody’s life by making a donation or monthly contribution to the Society. Your almsgiving is much needed and will be greatly appreciated by The Society. Should you wish to make a donation or arrange a regular monthly debit order, the following bank details can be used:

Bank: First National Bank Branch: Durban North Branch Code: 220-426

Account Number 62 033 860 786 Account Name: Society of St. Vincent de Paul

A SARS approved tax certificate for donations can be provided. Any queries can be sent to the SVDP via the Parish Office or email:

And all new members are welcome.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C
27th January 2013 Gerard Deighan
Commentary
First Reading (Neh 8:2-6, 8-10). The exiles have returned to Jerusalem from Babylon, and Ezra leads them in a solemn ritual to renew their commitment to the Lord. Ezra is called both priest and scribe, but it is in the latter role, as master of the word, that we see him here.
The date is significant: it is the first day of the seventh month, which was considered the beginning of the new year (Rosh Hashanah): this is a ritual of new beginnings. The location is also important. Gateways were common meeting-places in ancient times, but the gateway is a particularly suitable location for this ceremony, since the people are about to ‘re-enter’ their city spiritually. The Water Gate was situated on the east wall of Jerusalem, and so this liturgy of renewal would take place, appropriately, towards the rising sun.
Ezra reads at length from ‘the Law’ (Torah), which we may take to be some form of our Pentateuch. Translation and explanation was necessary, since the text was in Hebrew, and the returned exiles were more familiar with the Aramaic spoken in Babylon. This fact makes the attention of the people even more admirable – they listened for an entire morning. To attention they add reverence; when Ezra opens the book (really a scroll) they stand (as we still do for the gospel). And to reverence for his word they add prayer and praise of God.
There are also tears, however. The reading of the Law has made clear to them how much of their tradition they had lost sight of while in Babylon; and no doubt there were tears of repentance too, as they realised how unfaithful they had been to the commandments of their God. But Ezra insists that God is a God of joy, not sorrow. The joy which comes from the Lord will give them strength to be faithful to the Law in the future. The people are sent away to partake in a rich and joyful meal. The parallel with our Eucharist is irresistible. While the Liturgy of the Word may challenge us, the Eucharist Banquet gives us strength and joy to rise to every challenge.
