Strategic Planning:What goals were set that relate to the Rho Chi mission?

It was our goal to start a journal club at our university that would help prepare us for rotations and our future careers. We have a class pertaining to journal clubs in our curriculum but we felt having additional practice would be very beneficial. Another goal we had was to find a new fundraiser for our organization that would work better with our busy schedules. My last goal for our group was to ensure the transition between new members involved a thorough explanation of what is expected of our Rho Chi members as far as duties and roles within the our organization and the school.

Activities

This year our members were involved in clinical faculty led journal clubs which were held once during the fall semester and twice in the spring semester. The first journal club was for Rho Chi members only and the remainder were open to the rest of our pharmacy school.
Our organization was in charge of tutoring for the pharmacy school's first year and second year students.
We participated in our annual community health fair by offering hemoglobin A1c and lipid testing at our booth as well as diabetes and high cholesterol education.

Financial Budgeting

As a group we decided to leave our organization with the same amount or more money than we started with which was $3000. We also did not want to spend more than $600 for our initiation dinner. Our fourth year graduation gifts were another expense we wanted to keep under $200. This year for fundraising in the fall semester we sold Butter Braids and raised $745. We also sold Sigler drug cards in the spring semester and raised $650.

Installation Function

We held our initiation function at Altitude Chophouse and Brewery in Laramie, Wyoming, on April 26, 2017 at 6:30 pm. Our election of new officers was held there as well after the dinner. Current members and new members brought friends and family to celebrate their achievements.

Evaluation/Reflection

Our journal clubs turned out to be very helpful. Overall, we felt more prepared to be involved with journal clubs on rotations next year. We wanted to have more than three but it did not work out with our busy schedules. We also wanted to hold a pharmaceutical calculation review session, however, we were not able to coordinate with a professor to accomplish this. I encouraged the new members to hold more journal clubs if possible and invite other non-clinical faculty to lead these as well next year. Our booth at the health fair was a success. Every Rho Chi member was present to help out. Our appointments filled up so much that we had to turn people away at the end of the event. It has historically been a popular booth since A1c testing is more expensive than blood glucose testing and we offer the service for free. We had very few students utilize our tutoring services over the year. The first year students were generally made up of introvert personalities so we learned that they were intimidated to reach out to us for help which was unfortunate. I suggested to the new members that they should have a "meet and greet" with the incoming class next year so they are more comfortable to come to the Rho Chi organization for tutoring or even just advice with handling the demands of pharmacy school. Our fundraising events were successful and we were able to make enough money to cover our expenses for the year. Butter braids was a new fundraising idea that has never been tried at our school. The people who purchased them enjoyed them and hope that the next group will sell them next year. We might have started a new Rho Chi tradition at our school.
