AP Physics 1 Summer Review Assignment

Work 0n Separate Sheet of paper

AP Physics 1 is an algebra-based, introductory college-level physics course. Students cultivate their understanding of Physics through inquiry-based investigations as they explore topics such as Newtonian mechanics (including rotational motion); work, energy, and power; mechanical waves and sound; and introductory, simple circuits.

Algebra

You will be provided an equation sheet during the test. Each symbol in the equations has its meaning. You need to solve the physics problems numerically and symbolically.

For questions 1-5 use the equations given in the right.

  1. If given v0= 4 m/s, vf= 28 m/s and a= 4 m/s2 , using equation 1

solve t.

  1. v0=10 m/s, x0 =10m, x=120m and a=10 m/s2, using equation 2

solve t.

  1. vf=25 m/s,v0=15 m/s, xf=125m,x0=25m, use equation 3 solve a.
  1. vf =25 m/s, v0=15m/s, a=5 m/s2, x0=25m, use equation 3 solvexf.
  1. vf =25 m/s, a=5 m/s2, xf=125m,x0=25m, use equation 3 solve v0.

Often problems on the AP exam are done with variable only. Below(6-10) are various physics formulas. Manipulate the equations algebraically as though they were numbers and solve for the variable indicated (you do not need to know the variables’ meaning now.

  1. Solve v.
  1. Solve v.
  1. Solve g.
  1. Solve.
  1. Solve r.

Algebraic Relationships

Example: Consider the equation c=a/b, ifa is doubled and b stays constant, c will be double too.

If b is doubled and a stays constant, c will be ½ of the original c (cut in halve).

Based on this equation

  1. If m1doubled (other variables stay constant), how does F change?
  1. If both m1 and m2 doubled (other variables stay constant), how does F change?
  1. If r doubled (other variables stay constant), how does F change?
  1. based on this equation,

If g is cut in halve (other variables stay constant), how does Tpchange?

Scientific Notation

Examples: 25,000 = 2.5 x 104 0.0000367= 3.67 x 10-5

Express the following number in scientific notation:

  1. 0.00078 =
  1. 500,000,000 =
  1. 0.000000575 =
  1. 995000 =

Convert from scientific notation to normal notation:

  1. 6.99 x 109 =
  1. 9.87x 1012=
  1. 13.5 x 10-12=
  1. 5x10-9=

Multiplying Numbers in Scientific Notation (Explain how you get the answer)

  1. (6.67x 10-11) x (6.32x1024)
  1. (6.2x 1031)x (9.32 x 10-28)

Addition and subtraction in Scientific Notation (Explain how you get the answer)

  1. 3.5x 1011+9.5x 109

Graphing Skill

37. A car rental company charges an initial fee of $60 per day plus 12 cents per kilometer.

a)Write a formula relating the kilometers travelled to the total cost for different days’ rental. Don’t forget to define the variables.

b)Draw up a table of values and construct a graph to represent this relationship.

c)From your graph, determine the cost of renting the car for one day and driving 260 kilometers.

d)If you had $120 to spend, how many kilometers could you travel in oneday?

38. The equation gives the equation of density. Draw a graph base on the folloing table.

Mass m (kg) / Volume V (liter)
5 / 10
15 / 30
25 / 50
40 / 80
55 / 110

a)Draw a graph based on the above table(X-indicate V, y-indicate m).

b)What does the graph look like?

c)What is the slope of the graph? What is the meaning of the slope?
