Welcome to Regina Athletics
MissionStatement
Regina Dominican, a college preparatory Catholic school for women, sponsored by the Adrian Dominicans, fosters academic excellence, truth, peace and justice while challenging each student to develop leadership for life and respect for all races, cultures and faiths.
Regina Dominican Leadership Model
Regina Dominican promotes the Dominican Principles, of VERITAS (Truth) and CARITAS (Compassion), as well as the four tenets of the Regina Dominican Leadership Model these Dominican principles have inspired: Authentic Self-Confidence, Joyful Learning, Global Citizenship and Compelling Communication.
Philosophy
Athletics are an integral component of Regina’s commitment to develop and educate the entirety of our student. RDHS strives to create a definable sports culture by providing tools and training to our student athletes, parents, coaches and administrators. Our goal is to promote our leadership model in Athletics by developing our student-athlete’s self-confidence, resilience, teamwork, mental toughness, self-control and respect for others. By impacting our student-athletes character and values on the field of play, RDHS has a significant opportunity to impact the young women who will be our future leaders.
Code of Conduct
All students participating in athletics must comply with conduct requirements set forth in thishandbook and all other RDHS policies, procedures, regulations and rulesat all times and places, including after school, on days when school is not in session, during summer and other breaks, and on and off school property.Any conduct that would violate such policies, procedures, regulations or rules constitutes a violation of this code of conduct. This includes, but is not limited to, any conduct that is detrimental to the reputation of the school, that disrupts the good order of the school or its athletic or extra-curricular activities, or that may be harmful to the school or its athletic or extra-curricular environments or to any individual or group of individuals within the school community or related athletic or extra-curricular communities.
A student who violates any school policies, procedures, regulations, or rules, including as set forth in this handbook and the RDHS student handbook, may face disciplinary action both in school and with respect to the athletic and extra-curricular activities in which she participates. Consequences may be imposed in athletics even if more formal school discipline is not imposed.
If a student is not currently participating in athletics and engages in conduct that would violate these expectations, the consequences will be enforced for the full period of time justified by the conduct should the student decide to begin participating in athletics at a later date.
Prayer Before Competition
May God the creator bless us, may God the redeemer heal us, may God the Holy Spirit enlighten us, give us eyes to see, ears to hear and hands to do the work of God, feet to walk the path of justice and mouths to preach the good news. And may the Angel of Peace watch over us and lead us at last to the reign of God, Amen
The Relationship between the Coach and the Community
The relationship for the coach at Regina Dominican concerns his/her role with parents of athletes, other members of the school community and the community at large beyond Regina Dominican.
The Relationship between the Coach and the Parents
A coach should do all he/she can to provide a positive experience for student-athletes. Possibly the most important ingredient to achieve this outcome is to ensure that lines of communication are developed to allow for free and easy resolution of questions before they become issues. Parents have a right to know what expectations are being placed on their child.
A coach should communicate to the parent and the athlete his/her goals and expectations at the beginning of a season. The coach must state, via a letter sent to the parents or handed out at the team’s preseason meeting, the expected time commitment, expectations of the athlete and the benefits the athlete will derive from the specific program. The coach should be open to communication from parents and encourage their support and interaction with the program.
Parents should receive communication in the following areas:
- Philosophy of the coach.
- Expectations the coach has for players.
- Times of all practices and contests.
- Team requirements (equipment, off-season training, etc.).
- Participant conduct code and discipline that result in the denial of a player’s participation.
- Communication concerning each athlete’s role on the team and how she fits into the future of the program.
- Availability to meet with parents when situations arise.
Eligibility:
- Students are ineligible for games or meets in any sport if they fail to meet the following weekly academic eligibility requirements: An athlete must have no grades of “F” and no more than one grade of “D.” Eligibility checks are done on Thursday afternoons.
- Eligibility is determined on a weekly basis from the following Monday thru Sunday.
Physical and permission forms:
The coach will collect and turn into the Athletic Director all athletes’ Student-Athlete Agreementsand physical exams, and exclude any athlete from practice or competition who has not returned such documentation by the specified date at the beginning of each competitive season. No one is allowed to participate without the forms being turned into the Athletic Director’s office.
Athletes Expectations
When you are part of an athletic team, you represent Regina Dominican. You are expected to show mature and appropriate behavior on and off the field, court or pool. We need quality people and athletes to have a quality athletic program. Quality athletes are good winners, as well as good losers, and display good sportsmanship at all times.
Hazing
Any activity created with the intention of causing another student mental, emotional or physical discomfort, embarrassment, or ridicule is considered hazing and is not tolerated under any circumstance. Incidents of hazing should be reported immediately to the Athletic Director or Dean of Students.
Playing Time
Playing time is based on the coach’s evaluation of skill, physical ability andperformance during games, work ethic, individual attitude and team attitude.
Transportation
Regina Dominican provides bus and/or van transportation to and from all athletic contests (not practices or games at Techny). In rare instances, permission may be given to individuals to drive to contests. The parent emergency treatment and release form indicates a parent’s permission to drive. When driving to a contest, student-athletes will not be allowed to transport spectators.
Athlete/Parent/Coach Communication
Athletes, parents and coaches. Communication fosters a relationship among all stakeholders based on mutual respect and understanding. Discussions with the coach should take place atthe appropriate time, in the appropriate place. Especially after contests, we ask you to wait 24 hours before contacting a coach with concerns from the day/night before. This will ensure that everyone is in the proper frame of mind before engaging in any type of discussion.
Appropriate concerns to discuss with the coach include: issues of mental and physical wellbeing, strategies for improving individual performance, and issues of behavior. Inappropriate issues to discuss with the coach include: playing time, starting positions, team strategy, play calling, and other members of the team.Student-athletes are encouraged to resolve their issues with their coaches directly. This helps with developing the respect and cooperation that exist between athletes and coaches. After this communication takes place, parents may ask to speak with the coach to further clarify the findings of the initial meeting. At times, a situation may need to be resolved through the mediation of the athletic director. However, parents should speak with the coach first before approaching the administration. This ensures that any coach directly involved with an issue can personally work with parents and athletes to resolve it effectively
