JOB TITLE: RCN Officer

DEPARTMENT: East Midlands

REPORTS TO: Operational Manager

HOURS: 17.5 hours per week

GRADE: F

SALARY RANGE £35,352 per annum (to be pro-rata’d if part time)

LOCATION: Nottingham office

JOB PURPOSE:

To work with a designated Senior RCN Officer and assist them in the provision of services for members, activists and branches within a geographical area. This will include advice and representation on education, employment and professional practice matters for individuals and groups of members.

Main duties and responsibilities

·  Assist the Senior RCN Officer in the development and delivery of high quality and accessible Trade Union Services to RCN members.

·  Under the supervision of the designated Senior RCN Officer manage employee relations cases in line with best practice, the RCN procedure and data protection guidelines.

·  Advise and represent members both individually and collectively in relation to issues arising out of their professional practice, continuing professional development and their terms and conditions of employment such as discipline, grievance, industrial injuries, health and safety at work etc.

·  Assist with the support and development of activities of the RCN within local branches, RCN membership groups and members’ workplaces.

·  Assist the Senior RCN Officer in recruiting, supporting and participating in the learning and development and training of local activists of the RCN including Branch and Local Forum members in order to develop and retain knowledgeable, skilled and experienced activists.

Specific Role Duties

·  Support the Senior RCN Officer in representing the RCN locally and strategically as required, working with employers, other trade unions and a range of stakeholders.

·  Build relationships with member employers in order to negotiate effectively.

·  Assist the Senior RCN Officer in working with employers and safety representatives to promote a positive safety culture and ensure that RCN members work within safe and appropriate working environments.

·  Liaise with other professional organisations and trade unions on areas of mutual concern or interest.

·  Assist the Senior RCN Officer in facilitating membership Learning and Development programmes.

·  Assist the Senior RCN Officer in supporting the activist Learning and Development programmes locally and be the focus for effective activist mentorship within the area.

Strategic Duties

·  Support the designated Senior RCN Officer in the achievement of RCN Strategic and Operational objectives within the area.

·  Gather intelligence and campaign on behalf of the RCN for the benefits of RCN members in line with the RCN position.

·  Support the development of services for members.

Promote

·  Promote the RCN as the organisation that represents nurses and members of the nursing family, excellence in practice and shapes health policies.

·  Raise the awareness of nursing and health and social care issues across the region.

·  Assist in developing the promotional, press and media work of the RCN within the region and participate in activities and projects when appropriate.

·  Support the RCN’s local marketing strategy by maximising the increase in membership through the recruitment and retention of RCN members from within the NHS, Health and Social Care Sector and Educational Establishments. Assist in the development of services to new membership categories such as Health Care Assistants.

·  Promote practice development including innovation, leadership, excellence, clinical quality and patient safety.

·  Maintain and enhance an up to date knowledge on employment legislation, nursing and healthcare issues.

·  Ensure a commitment to Personal and Professional Development including links to the RCN Professional Development Framework.

·  Improve individual performance in line with the annual appraisal, operational and strategic objectives.

Management Responsibilities

·  Manage self by taking personal ownership of work and career development.

Financial Responsibilities

·  Contribute to all internal and external audit processes ensuring implementation of recommendations within sphere of control.

·  Contribute to the effective use of RCN resources.
