A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates was born on July 1, 1984, in Hardin County, Kentucky; and he traversed these earthly bounds on September 18, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Eric D. Yates is the son of David and Kathy Yates; he is the brother of Nathan; he is also survived by grandparents, Herbert Crabb and Lawrence Yates; and he leaves behind many other family members and friends who loved him dearly; and

WHEREAS, 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates graduated from John Hardin High School in 2003, where he participated in the ROTC program; he graduated with double majors in Social Studies and History from Western Kentucky University in 2008; he loved books, movies and history, particularly those about Julius Caesar and the Roman Republic; and he received his commission through Western Kentucky University’s Reserve Officers’ Training Program; and

WHEREAS, 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates enlisted in the United States Army in December 2008; and he was assigned to the Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, the life of 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates ended prematurely of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates is remembered by his friends as a man of few words, who had had something worthwhile to say when he spoke;he is also remembered as "a sensible and likeable young man" by his former social studies teacher; he was buried with full military honors at the Saint John Cemetery in Rineyville, Kentucky; and his awards and decorations include the: National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon and Combat Action Badge; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Kentucky has the highest respect for 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates and is deeply grateful for the ultimate sacrifice he made for the freedom of all Americans; and

WHEREAS, the passing of 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates and extends to his family and many friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates.

Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit one copy of this Resolution to the parents of 1st Lieutenant Eric D. Yates, David and Kathy Yates, 2587 Saint John Church Road, Rineyville, KY 40162-9795.
