TITLE: International Legacy Specialist
TEAM/PROGRAMME: Global Fundraising Hub / LOCATION:
Any existing Save the Children location.
The role will involve up to 25% international travel.
GRADE: TBC / CONTRACT LENGTH: Open ended
CHILD SAFEGUARDING:
Level 1: the post holder will not have contact with children and/or young people, or access to personal data about children or young people, as part of their work; therefore a police check will not be mandatory for this post unless the content of the post changes, in which case the Child Safeguarding level should be reviewed.
ROLE PURPOSE:
Save the Children launched its ambitious 2016 – 2018 strategic plan with the aim of significantly increasing unrestricted funds. Engaging, inspiring and retaining our supporters and increasing their value over time has been identified as key to our unrestricted income growth.
The Global Fundraising Hub was created at Save the Children International in 2016 and is a virtual team of 12-15 experienced international fundraisers. The new Hub sits in the Member Growth team, headquartered in London, and provides strategic support and technical guidance to our Members in Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America. A number of the team members work remotely and the location of this job is flexible.
Reporting to the International Donor Development Manager, the purpose of this role is to support Members to develop, drive and promote best practice in legacy fundraising, and position this area of fundraising as a key driver of long-term unrestricted income for our work with children.
The International Legacy Specialist will:
·  Be the in-house global legacy expert at Save the Children, establish collaborative working and create a network of legacy fundraisers who together will ensure this currently under-developed area of fundraising becomes a strategic fundraising priority both globally and nationally
·  Support Members to build their legacy pipelines from their existing supporter bases and identify opportunities to secure pledgers from external sources
·  Drive the creation of best practice donor journeys, that move prospects through the legacy pipeline
·  Manage expectations of the various fundraising stakeholders on return of investment associated gifts in Wills
·  Support Members to gain and maintain funding for their legacy fundraising activities through monitoring and evaluation and support on building business cases
·  Identify the critical insights and the best practice examples that maximize opportunities to increase the amount of income Save the Children raises from this funding stream
·  Collaborate effectively with SCI specialists (F2F, DRTV, Donor Development & Digital) and the Market Development Team to ensure that effective legacy strategies are developed, embedded and integrated across Members.
In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal job description and be able to vary work hours accordingly.
SCOPE OF ROLE:
Reports to: International Donor Development Manager
Number of direct reports: None
Budget Responsibilities: Indirectly responsible for meeting retention and development expenditure and income goals in assigned countries, in line with agreed international growth targets.
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
Direct Support: Support new and existing fundraising markets as and when required.
Work in collaboration with specialist colleagues in the Global Fundraising Hub at SCI and fundraising teams in key Members, Legacy Leads and Regional Heads of Market Development to develop a global legacy strategy aimed at realising the value of Gifts in Wills for Save the Children and positioning them as priority drivers of unrestricted income. This support involves
·  Leading a Member-based legacy steering group, tasked with co-funding the development of a legacy fundraising toolkit
o  Identify the markets with greatest potential to generate legacy gifts
o  Create best practice acquisition and stewardship communications and assets, covering the entire legacy pipeline
o  Ensure content is gathered from the field that meets the specific needs of this donor group
o  Consider the specific needs of the key warm donor groups – individual donors and major donors
o  Develop data mining tools (propensity models), that enable Members to identify legacy prospects on their donor base
o  Look for new and innovative ways to continually feed the legacy prospect pipeline
·  Lead the development of a core set of KPIs that allow Members to effectively measure the success for their legacy pipelines
o  Develop an annual tracking and monitoring system of specific legacy pipeline KPIs
o  Gain Member agreement on which KPIs to track and their definitions
o  Support Members in evaluating the return on investment
o  Assist Members in developing their requests for investment in legacy fundraising
o  Annually report back to key stakeholders at Save the Children on the status of the pipeline and provide guidance on projected ROIs
·  Provide hands-on support to colleagues in the selection and management of external notaries and legal advisors, and their participation in national campaigns
·  Develop training tools that support Members in making legacy asks to new and existing donors e.g. major donors, telemarketing teams
·  Support Members as required during the annual planning process and their request for additional resource (staff & budget)
Knowledge Management & Best Practice: Provide a central point for best practice, knowledge management and sharing to improve the expertise and quality of Legacy fundraising across Save the Children.
·  Responsible for the development and rollout of legacy best practice at Save the Children
o  Ensure all Members are aware of the latest best practices and how to access them
o  Advise Members in the implementation of best practice
o  Track the implementation of best practices amongst Members including any testing
o  Keep abreast of emerging or new best practices across the network
·  Responsible for keeping up-to-date the knowledge sharing platform on the international intranet so that
o  Optimised legacy assets can be shared (stewardship journeys, telemarketing scripts, content, development strategies etc)
o  All Members know that these materials exist and know how to access them
·  Assist in the creation of a series of legacy best practice toolkits for use by all Members. e.g warm acquisition, legacy fundraising to Major donors, how to begin legacy fundraising
Internal focus: Support Members with the internal communication of legacy fundraising and leaving gifts in Wills
·  Champion legacy fundraising at Save the Children. This includes educating staff on what legacy fundraising is, why it’s so important for our work with children and managing expectation on when a return on investment will be seen
·  Develop an internal messaging framework that supports colleagues who are required to have any form of dialogue on Legacies with external audiences
·  Create effective links and greater dialogue between legacy fundraisers across the Save the Children Network, through the creation of a Legacy Practitioner group
·  Every 24 months organise a legacy fundraising skill share.
External focus: Ensure that Save the Children is tracking and driving global developments in legacy fundraising
·  Represent Save the Children on the International Fundraising Leadership Forum Legacy Working Group (peers legacy specialists in other international NGOs)
·  Ensure Legacy KPIs are tracked, monitored and analysed in both the IFL Forum Peer Review and Global Donor Insights Initiative and encourage peers to share more Legacy KPIs
·  Responsible for keeping up-to-date with relevant sector trends and research, and harness this to inspire Save the Children’s legacy fundraising programmes.
QUALIFICATIONS
·  University degree or other relevant professional qualification or experience
·  Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), Institute of Fundraising (IoF) or Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM) qualifications or overseas equivalent would be an advantage.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
·  Significant experience in planning and executing Legacy fundraising strategies and providing technical expertise
·  Proven experience of delivering legacy fundraising with a demonstrable record of success in securing pledgers and developing a legacy pipeline. Experience in doing this in multiple markets is an advantage or at the global level in an international team.
·  Experience developing and implementing supporter journeys across multiple channels, designed to stewardship donors in all phases of the pipeline
·  Skills in developing both warm and cold legacy acquisition campaigns for both individual and major donors
·  Capacity to build and maintain excellent relations and to work effectively in a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment respecting diversity
·  Strong personal organisational and self-management skills with an ability to motivate others
·  Ability to think critically, objectively, analytically and strategically, solve problems quickly and show initiative
·  Ability to articulate the work of Save the Children with passion
·  A self-starter using initiative to see opportunities to achieve objectives in this role
·  Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
·  Strong IT skills particularly in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
·  Fluent in English with excellent writing and speaking mandatory, additional language would be an asset
·  Willing to travel to support Members directly or to relevant events as required.
