GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the DON/ADON the house supervisor performs clinical and administrative responsibilities for the facility during his/her assigned shift.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: *
- Complies with established nursing standards, policies and procedures of the Nursing Department and the facility.
- Responsible for maintaining continuity of resident care as ordered by the medical provider and established per resident plan of care.
- Makes rounds on all units, communicating with the nursing staff and checking residents as the need arises.
- Assesses staffing needs on all units, reassigns staff as needed to assure adequate staffing on all units.
- Oversees the orientation of new staff on their assigned shift.
- Advises the Staff Development Coordinator of educational needs of the staff.
- Receives call outs and attempts to fill RN/LPN/LNA staffing vacancy by reassigning staff or by calling in other staff.
- Assesses and mediates the resolution of employee problems through coordination of appropriate meetings and other interventions as needed.
- Participates in follow-up on all issues arising from resident care plan meeting.
- Participates in the evaluations of nursing staff.
- Delegates responsibilities to nursing staff consistent with abilities, job description and scope of practice.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS CONTINUED: *
- Communicates concerns to DON or ADON and participates in nursing manager meetings as needed.
- Is flexible in assuming coverage in the on-call rotation with DON, ADON, MDS Coordinator, Director of Staff Development and other Managers as scheduled by DON.
- Works as a staff nurse when deemed necessary by DON or ADON.
- Works as House Supervisor every other weekend.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:
Duties require knowledge of nursing equivalent to completion of an Associate’s Degree in Nursing, plus advanced courses and five to seven years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience as a supervisor preferred.
Must have leadership, organizational, planning and supervisory skills.
Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of New Hampshire.
Must have knowledge of long term care and geriatric nursing.
Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation required.
Must have knowledge of and comply with relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations, including the administrative rules as set forth by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing.
Must have knowledge in the theories and practice of nursing, especially in assessing physical and emotional needs and providing emergency care.
Demonstrates good judgment, compassion and professionalism in dealing with residents and their families.
Must have the ability to be detail oriented and handle multiple tasks.
Must have excellent listening skills.
Must have ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, to establish positive public relations for the County and to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED CONTINUED:
Must have ability to perform tasks requiring finger and hand dexterity, and extensive eye/hand coordination.
Must have math competency to calculate weight percentages and drug dosages.
Must have visual and aural acuity to detect changes in residents’ conditions.
Must have ability to analyze emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action according to Department procedures.
Demonstrates ethical behavior regarding confidentiality and residents’ rights.
Maintains the confidentiality of all resident and facility information, and ensures information is not released without proper authorization.
Must be experienced in drawing blood and handling IV’s, including starting, maintaining and medicating.
Must be computer literate.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervises staff RNs, LPNs, MNAs, LNAs, PFAs, Unit Aides. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Grafton County’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include, but are not necessarily limited to, training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems, including staffing and scheduling issues.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is performed primarily in a nursing home environment, which is generally not subject to extremes in temperature, odors, etc.
May require some lifting of equipment and assisting patients with physical activities.
Uses medical diagnostic and testing equipment.
Requires reaching, stooping and bending, and/or heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) when conducting examinations and assisting residents.
Requires prolonged periods of sitting, standing and walking.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS(continued):
Exposure to possible infectious and communicable diseases and other biological hazards requiring exercise of appropriate safety and standard precautions.
Assistance to patients and lifting of equipment requires appropriate use of body mechanics.
