Healthcare Research Initiative
Request for Proposals
Bucknell University and Geisinger Health System announce a new, joint effort to provide financial support for collaborative, healthcare research projects between Bucknell faculty and staff, and Geisinger physicians and scientists. The primary focus of this competitive funding opportunity is to encourage and enhance collaborative efforts that target the areas of medical devices, neuroscience or high performance computing in relation to current healthcare challenges. A secondary focus is to provide mechanisms for the establishment of collaborative interactions that have lasting potential. While evidence of past successful efforts between the two PIs will be valued, new collaborative efforts are also strongly encouraged. Proposals will be evaluated on the importance of the healthcare challenge being addressed, the quality of the scientific and design methods proposed, effective use of the requested funds, involvement of undergraduate students and the potential for future collaborative work beyond the grant period.
Funding for these opportunities will be initially targeted to a maximum of $50,000 for supporting faculty, scientists, staff, students and project supplies for one year. In compelling circumstances, equipment may also be supported. Funding for projects involving human subjects will be contingent upon appropriate IRB approval. Proposals must be jointly written and submitted by a Bucknell faculty member and a clinician or scientist at Geisinger with each party making significant contributions toward the effort. Progress reports will be required at the 6 and 12 month points of the project. Those projects judged the most successful and with the greatest potential may be invited to expand the initial collaboration by hiring a joint postdoctoral fellow to increase the impact of the research effort. Therefore, applicants are strongly encouraged to provide information on how the hiring of additional staff, e.g., post-doctoral researchers, would benefit the project. Overall, the optimal outcome of these seed projects is pilot data and a lasting collaboration that is likely to result in external funding and a sustained joint effort.
