Deafness and Hearing Loss: The Basics for Educators

Presenter: Celeste Bonfanti, Teacher of the Deaf

Ms. Bonfanti, has worked with deaf and hard of hearing people for over thirty years, both in New Jersey and in northern England. She is aSenior Adjunct Lecturer in Deaf Studies with Burlington County College. Ms. Bonfantihas been a Field Representative for the New Jersey Division of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a case worker with the Cumbria Deaf Association (UK) and a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing children with the Moorestown Township School District andGloucester County Special Services School District. Currently, Ms. Bonfanit is an Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and deaf awareness trainer for the Educational Services Unit of Burlington County Special Services. She co-founded the “Hearing Optional” social group for deaf and hard of hearing children and youth for which she coordinates monthly events.

Workshop Overview:

Participants will:

Compare/contrast the medical and cultural models of deafness

Learn the basics of audiology and the nature of sound; Receive an overview of the various types/degrees of deafness

Explore the aspects of acquired and pre-lingual hearing loss; Experience a simulated hearing loss and take an “Unfair Hearing Test”

Discuss the way pre-lingual deafness can affect family life, access to the wider community and educational success

Learn about the various communication methods available (auditory-verbal therapy, cued speech, total communication and ASL)

Receive practical tips for clear communication and interactive success

Registration Fee$60.00 (No fee for BCIP members)

Please contact your CST Office to determine if your district is a 2014-15BCIP participant.

*NOTE: 10 working day notice is required if district is cancelling and requesting a refund

BCIP participants will be given first priority.

Seats are limited! First 4 members from each district will be accepted(additional requests will be put on a wait list)

Registration Deadline: October 14, 2014

Upon completion of the workshop, Professional Development Certificates will be issued

Note: ESU employees must obtain their Supervisor’s approval (signature& date) prior to submission of form
