GENERAL TIPS / BEST PRACTICES

a. The Voice. As President, you are the main voice of EWB. Step up to this role. Take every opportunity you can to speak in public; being the voice requires projecting a confident, positive charisma both in and out of meetings.

b. Volunteer ringleader. Perhaps one of the hardest leadership roles is leading volunteers. With no formal authority over your subordinates, you must learn to be persuasive without being harsh or forceful. As with your role as the voice of EWB, charisma is your best friend. You must lead by inspiring positive determination in your team.

c. Delegator. The majority of your role involves delegating tasks to others. An effective president delegates nearly all of the heavy lifting to other team members. This is not out of laziness, rather necessity. Sometimes it can be tempting to do everything yourself, whether out of a need for control or the lack of effort from a team member, but in the long run you will only exhaust yourself and encourage other team members to rely on you to step in and save the day. It is often best for you to maintain a healthy distance from the action, only stepping in to resolve conflicts or stimulate activity.

d. Navigator. As the primary leader of EWB, it is your job to direct the course of the organization and keep activities in line with the established goals and procedures. You may need to do some goal setting yourself, with the input of your exec team. Lead the charge by constantly evaluating the goals and outcomes of the group and refine as needed.
