Regular Governing Board Meeting – March 17, 2011

OPEN SESSION:

1.CALL TO ORDER, ROLL CALL, PUBLIC COMMENTS:

Present: Trustees Martin, Kraemer, Porras, Pasero, Donnelley

Board President Jack Martin called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm.

1.1No Public Comment on Closed Session

The meeting was remanded to closed session at 6:02 pm.

OPEN SESSION:

Trustee Kraemer called the regular meeting to order at 7:06 pm. Board President Martin left immediately following closed session due to illness.

2.PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE/ADJUSTMENT OF AGENDA/PUBLIC COMMENTS:

Fairview School 5th grade Student of The Month Tessa Flournoy led the flag salute.

2.1Reporting out, Trustee Kraemer noted that no action was taken in closed session.

2.2There were no requests to have any agenda item heard at a specific time.

2.3No declarations of conflict of interest from any Governing Board Member(s) abstaining from discussions and voting on any particular agenda item(s).

2.4Student of the Month: Fairview School 5th grader Tessa Flournoy. Principal Boyles noted Tessa as being an all around great student. Her teachers regarded her hard work, responsibility and all her time spent helping the staff with correcting and filing their paperwork. They all stated she is just excited about learning and she even asked to start her own newspaper for the school. Principal Boyles noted her first edition was very good too and that she is currently working on the second edition.

2.5Public comment regarding any item that is not on the Open Session Agenda:

Bonnie Morgan stated she has a child enrolled at CK Price who is not currently in her custodial care. She noted he has been suspended a week at a time and gotten demerits taken away. It is her understanding that he has been provided with a camera to take end of year photos to provide him a distraction by focusing him on school involvement. She noted she feels this not in his best interest with all the infractions he has received.

3.COMMUNITY-STAFF AND/OR PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS:

3.1Principals Report – as submitted by Principals.

3.2Staff/Community Reports:

Certificated Representative Report – No report. An invitation for the Read-In was given to the Board.

Classified Representative Report – Ron Walker reported they are doing everything possible to keep things going smoothly. He stated he had gone to an Area 1 meeting and received beneficial information which made him thankful for the support we have in our District.

Student Representative Report – Jason Mendoza reported the Soc-Hop will be taking place March 25th. Jason reported track has started, sports teams have done very well and March 28th Elections will take place amongst the students campaigning. Allison Duckworth reported

3.3Transportation Update Report – Transportation director Mark Smith reported we have a great staff. He also thanked the Board and Administration for their continued support. He reported the Air Resources Grant he was able to get enabled them to make needed updates to a few of the busses. It also made it possible to update the electrical panel box out in the transportation department area due in part to age. Transportation was up in morning to 850 students and 900 in the afternoon.

3.4Assistant Superintendent’s Report – Dr. Brett reported he helped over at CK Price last week and one thing he noticed was that every morning the new gym was filled with kids playing basketball at 8:00 am. He commended Debbie Stewart for orchestrating the morning session for the students. Debbie gives and hour of her morning and even purchased basketballs and music from Wal-mart for the kids. Principal Boyles stated she prepares all the spread sheets for the teachers returning for the new school year. Debbie is also a team member involved in negotiations.

3.5Superintendent’s Report - Superintendent von Kleist agreed Debbie is a great teacher. He stated we are lucky to have a lot of very good employees and a lot to be thankful for. Superintendent von Kleist reported the new restrooms at North Valley campus should be functional in a couple weeks. He reported that he is currently working on pricing for the new building construction at CK Price. He stated there remains uncertainty with the upcoming State budget and many districts have sent out layoff notices to staff. Unfortunately we had to issue several. Superintendent von Kleist commended Principal Bramson for finding the funding to have Summer school this year. He also stated that, Principal Bramson, Tracy Quarne and Armand Brett started the APEX Learning program that serves 30 students from North Valley, OHS, and Community Day School. They are enrolled for credit recovery.

4.CONSENT ITEMS:

4.2Approved Vendor Warrants as submitted and classified and certificated salaries for the month of February 2011 – approved as submitted.

4.4Approved 1 year Leave for a Certificated Employee.

4.5Approved Re-classification of English Learners in Special Education.

Motion was made to approve items 4.1,4.2, 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5

PASSED 4-0 on a DONNELLEY/PASERO motion.

5.DISCUSSION/ACTION ITEMS:

8.BOARD REPORTS:

Trustee Donnelley thanked everyone for the Student of The Month. He commended CK Price and OHS bands for the great job they are doing. He wished all the sites luck with the testing that will be starting. He noted the freshman registration went really well at OHS.

Trustee Pasero stated he was impressed with the motivation from OUSD and its leadership is such a positive reinforcement. It is so great to see staff even after 31 years like Debbie Stewart still motivated.

Trustee Porras commended everyone on a job well done.

Trustee Kraemer thanked everyone for all his or her dedication even during these tough economic times.
