Hello! Welcome to keyboarding. I am happy to have you here.
Objective: To type 25 w.p.m. (no more than 3 errors) using the correct fingers with NO PEEKING!
How do we do it? Work, work, work, practice, practice, practice!
The program we use in class is called Keywords. It is a program that is already on our Neo2’s; a keyboard with a small screen. This program has 14 lessons. After every other lesson the students take an observed, timed test that they must pass with a proficiency of at least 25 w.p.m. and 90% accuracy, using the correct finger for each key. NO HUNT AND PECK ALLOWED!
This is one of the hardest classes for many students. The activity requires intense concentration and practice. Students who allow their focus to become blurred and don’t utilize the class time fall behind. Many parents ask, “What can I do to help?”
Here is what I recommend:
1. Ask your child what lesson they are on. Keep track of it so that you can see progress is being made and celebrate their success! This is really THE best way to keep your student on track and to excite and motivate them to do well.
2. Students should write in their planner which lesson they worked on in class each day they have keyboarding.
3. *Students are required to practice for 20 minutes on the days they don’t have their keyboarding class. (2-3 times per week) Students have a practice log that they are supposed to be using to keep track of their minutes outside of class. *Weekend practice is optional.
Have your child practice with an online program like: Dance Mat Typing. It’s free, ad free, and good for kids of all ages.J
4. If you wish to purchase a program to use at home, I recommend Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing.
** Grades are based upon the expected progress of a student enrolled in keyboarding. The early lessons take more time. As proficiency is achieved, the time it takes to learn the new material is reduced. All lessons must be completed by the end of the semester to earn an A+.
