Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: the stages and cycles of reproduction for goats; the factors involved in achieving optimum submission and conception rates in goats; and identifying and recording stock in oestrus.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the stages and cycles of reproduction for goats.

Range developmental, ovulation, oestrus, mating, conception, gestation, parturition, anoestrum.

Evidence requirements

1.1 The stages and cycles of reproduction are detailed in terms of sequence, length of time, and seasonal occurrence.

1.2 Animal activity is described for each stage and cycle of reproduction in relation to behaviour, physiological state and changes, the relationship between stages and cycles, and abnormal behaviour and signs.

1.3 Animal health factors are described for each stage and cycle of reproduction.

Range nutrition, disease risks, abnormality and injury risks, preventative treatments, animal handling.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate knowledge of the factors involved in achieving optimum submission and conception rates in goats.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Factors determining high submission rates are identified, and their influence is described in relation to feeding regime, animal condition, libido, heat and cycling identification, synchronisation, animal health, record-keeping, and post partum problems.

2.2 Factors determining optimum conception rates are identified and their influence is described in relation to high submission rate, semen fertility, animal health, feeding, animal condition, and libido.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate knowledge of identifying and recording stock in oestrus.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Signs of oestrus are described in terms of behaviours, physical signs, teasers, and detection aids.

3.2 Types of errors in oestrus detection are described and the possible consequences outlined.

3.3 Maintenance of stock records for livestock management purposes is described.
