Stories
From the President's pen
Posted by Richard Jarrett on Feb 09, 2014
Last week, we hadour monthlyClub Assembly at which the various Club Committees meet to plan and report on their activities. We also make space at this time for any other comments or announcements that people wish to make. Here are a few items that were raised:
  • There have been a couple of changes to the Committee organising the 2015 District Conference. Terry Rodoni and John Karran have unfortunately had to withdraw from the committee due to pressures of work. In their place, John Wotherspoon has taken over Sponsorship, with Ray Cullen giving him a hand, while Angus Tuck will join the committee as the link person for Local Arrangements (most of the Local Arrangements are being organised by the local club who report back to us through Angus). Thanks to Terry and John for their contribution to the committee thus far.
  • Andrew Black asked that people bringing in bags of Bottles and Cans should make sure they remove the caps from any bottles beforehand, as these need to be removed before we can cash them in. He is also seeking someone to manage the distribution of Entertainment Books this year.
  • One announcement of interest was that Phil and Rosemary Harding have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations to you both! Phil, by the way, is seeking suggestions for the speaker program - please email him with any ideas, either names or topics you would like covered.
This week, Ray Cullen will be telling us about the Latin American Fiesta website and how we can use Facebook and other means to promote the website.
Dean Sullivan will be act in the President's place for the next two weeks, while I am off in Tasmania for 2 weeks holiday. I have just visited MONA today - for Terry's benefit, that means the Museum of Old and New Art - a new addition to Hobart, funded by mathematician David Walsh who made his money using mathematics and computers to help make his gambling activities (highly) profitable. Just goes to show how useful mathematics can be when applied to real world problems!!!

Posted by Yvette Reade on Feb 01, 2014
Capture the sights, sounds and excitement of Latin America through a fascinating and electric mix of dance and entertainment while indulging in cuisine that delivers robust, flavourful and inventive food choices.
Following last year's successful event, the Rotary Club of Adelaide Light will again hold the Fiesta on Sunday 23 March from 11am-4pm on the Linde Reserve (access through Dunstone Grove) off Nelson Street Stepney (opp Avenues Shopping Centre). Admission $10 adults, $20 family.

Funds raised by the Fiesta will provide living expenses for underprivileged adult students undertaking their studies in Colombia's Bogota-Suba district (an area of extreme poverty).
Entertainment includes Aloysius Leeson Flamenco Guitar, Latino Grooves, SaSamba Drummers, Toco Madera Colombian Guitar Group, Tango dancers, Zumba for children and adults, and Daniel Larcombe. INSPIRATIONAL
As we get older we sometimes begin to doubt our ability to "make a difference" in the world.
It is at these times that our hopes are boosted by the remarkable achievements of other "seniors" who have found the courage to take on challenges that would make many of us wither.
Harold Schlumberg is such a person:
HAROLD SAYS: "I've often been asked, 'What do you do now that you're retired?
'Well...I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background and one of the things I enjoy most is converting beer, wine and whiskey into urine.
It's rewarding, uplifting, satisfying and fulfilling. I do it every day and I really enjoy it."
Harold is an inspiration to us all.

Archie and Jimmy
Two Glaswegians, Archie and Jimmy, are sitting in the pub discussing Jimmy's forthcoming wedding.
"Och, it's all goin' pure brilliant," says Jimmy. "Ar've got everythin' organised awready, the fluers, the church, the caurs, the reception, the rings, the minister, even ma stag night".
Archie nods approvingly.
I've even bought a kilt to be married in!" continues Jimmy.
"A kilt?" exclaims Archie, "That's magic, you'll look pure smart in that.
What's the tartan?...."
"Och," says Jimmy, "A'd imagine she'll be in white."
