Summer Meet at the Smiths

DATE: Saturday, July 28, 2012

TIME: 12:00 Noon

PLACE: 97 Old County Road, Higganum, CT

HOSTED BY: Byron & Mill Smith

Please bring your lunch and a lawn chair (although some will be available). Drinks and desserts will be provided. Parking for Model T’s will be down the gravel driveway on the left, and in front of the back garage, or on the grass in back of the house. Modern cars can be parked on the road, in front of the house. If you have any questions, or need more specific directions, you can contact Byron or Mill at (860) 345-2857.

A tour around the local back roads of Higganum, and the surrounding area, is planned for the afternoon.

Directions: Old County Road can be reached most readily from Route 81, which runs north-south from Higganum to Clinton. Approaching from the shoreline, turn right onto Beaver Meadow Rd., which is about 10 miles north of the turnpike, and about 3 miles north of Route 148. The road is shortly after the Sunoco gas station and opposite Burr Rd. (Note: Old County Road goes through to Rt. 81, but is not readily passable at that end.)

Approaching from the north, turn left on Beaver Meadow Rd., which is about 3 miles south of Route 9. The road is immediately after Dino’s Pizza Restaurant, and opposite Burr Rd.

After turning onto Beaver Meadow Rd., continue straight for ½ mile (Beaver Meadow Rd. actually turns left, but continue straight), and turn right onto Old County Rd. The house is ¼ mile ahead on the left. It is light grey with brick on the lower front, at the top of a little rise in the road. Trailer parking is not available at the house.Note: There is also the option of coming up Beaver Meadow Road from Rt.154 or Rt. 9; or of coming up Parker Hill Road from Rt.148.

Future Member?

Willard Revaz was contacted by Lukas Harvey, a 5th grader from North Haven. He is 10 years old and is doing a school project on the Model-T. Willard invited him to the Hayland Farm Meet so that he might get a look at some Model Ts and have these questions answered: How many were made? When were they made? How come some are not black? How fast did they go? How much did they cost? What was the Horsepower? How were the roads long ago? How many still remain? How reliable were they?

Willard tried to provide a comprehendable answer to each for someone his age, but soon found this is one very smart 10 year old!

Lukas and his father were very impressed by Willard taking them for a short ride also.

Perhaps in a few years we will have him joining our club or at least becoming interested in our hobby.

Annual Tour – August 10, 11 & 12

We will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express -quite new- in Woonsocket, RI. There seems to be ample parking for our cars and trailers. There is a nice stainless steel type diner across the front lot, however the hotel offers a pretty nice free breakfast with a stay. On Saturday morning we plan to visit the Museum of Work and Culture about 2 miles from the hotel. After that we will drive along the Blackstone River and Canal to Sutton,Massachusetts and Purgatory Chasm State Park. We hope to find a good place for a box lunch to take to the park. You will need sneakers or hiking boots if you would like to try the short hike thru the Chasm. You will see the Devils Coffin, Fat man squeeze, Lovers Leap, all in about 30 minutes or so. Mid-afternoon we will turn south to the Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park. From there it is a 30 minute ride back to Woonsocket's River Falls Restaurant. Some may want to try the Vintage Restaurant or back to the Old English. Sunday we will try a little different route back. If anyone has questions call Ralph or Connie at 203-376-6796.

President’s Message

I was glad to see so many of you at the Hayland Farm Meet, even though it was not an official Crankin' Yanks Meet. The newest Crankin' Yank member, Danny Bawlick, brought his 1917 Roadster Pick Up to the meet. Please welcome Danny and his wife Lisa to the club when you see them. Willard Revaz invited a special guest, who you can read about on page 3.
Thank you to the Robinsons for hosting our June meet. They had a great day, great group and a great time! Sorry we had to miss it.
We are looking forward to our first national tour. The MTFCI is hosting its' 2012 meet in Rutland, Vermont. We are looking forward to seeing the Revazs' and friends of ours from Wisconsin and New York.
A long time friend of mine passed away. Even though you probably didn't know John Capecelatro, you knew his 1921 Model T Fire Truck, which he allowed me to use.
Hope to see many of you at Smiths' meet on July 28th and our annual tour in August.

See you all down the road,

Charlie
