INSTRUCTION

INTRODUCTION or Anticipatory SetTime: 10 minutes
We have been discussing dividing fractions the past few days. We will begin with a short review called Round Robin Post – It. Each group of three will be given three problems (each group has the same three problems) on three separate pieces of paper. They will work their own problem during the allotted time. When time is up they will pass their paper to the person next to them. Underneath that problem, they will work the same problem. This will continue until all problems have been worked and the group agrees with the answers. We will give the answers to the questions provided; I will then take up the questions so that I can make an assessment of what has been learned.
We will review how to find the reciprocals of fractions, how to change mixed numbers into improper fractions and how to divide fractions by using reciprocals.
BODY (Activities & Practice)
ActivitiesTime: 20 minutes
Review – 5 minutes
We will go over homework and work any problems that students may have missed or does not understand.
Word Problems –15 minutes
I will work several problems out on the board with help from students. ( I will use my popsicle sticks to get volunteers)
I will encourage students to work the problem out on their whiteboard. I will help them set the first couple of problems up, and then I will ask that they set up the problem and work it out on their own.
(see word problems attached)
Practice/AssessmentTime: 10 minutes/ Homework
Students will be given a worksheet to practice the skills they have learned. This will be done in class and any work not finished will be done as homework and will be turned in on Wednesday.
Worksheet attached.
CLOSURETime: 3 minutes
Review the steps to dividing fractions. I will ask that students answer the following questions on their whiteboard:
1)What is another name for reciprocal?
2)When do we use a reciprocal?
3)What steps do we take to divide fractions?
4)What do we do with improper fractions before we divide?
5)What are some key phrases we see in word problems that let us know we are going to divide?

ASSESSMENT

Evaluation:
Informal: White board evaluations from questions
Formal: Review Game (the Round Robin Post it game) and homework.

Alternative and/or Supplemental Activities/Extensions:

There are some fraction math games (virtual manipulative) that can be used to supplement the lesson.

Reteaching:

Math tutorial videos could be used to help reinforce ideas.
