PSSA Test Taking Tips

For Parents:

Do what you can to see that your children get a good night’s sleep the night before the test. Sleepy children are generally less able to maintain focus.

Please make sure that your children eatwell balanced meals the night before the test and the morning of the test. (Breakfast will be provided at school on testing mornings, for anyone who wants to eat here.) Good nutrition will keep the children alert.

Encourage your children to wear comfortable, layered clothing.

Pack lunches and backpacks the night before tests to keep mornings unhurried.

Get your children to school on time so they can calmly go through their morning routine with the rest of their class.

For Students:

Take a few deep breathes before the tests to bring fresh oxygen to your brain and clear your head.

Listen carefully to all directions and carefully read all questions.

Scan the test before you begin working to give you an idea of how long it is and the types of questions asked.

Pace yourself. Don’t spend too much time on any one question.

Answer the easiest questions first.

Read all multiple choice answers before answering. There may be more than one correct answer. You are looking for the best answer. Cross out all answers that you know are incorrect.

Circle key or clue words in difficult questions to help you focus on main points.

Stay inside the bubble as you mark your answer sheet.

Use all of the time you are given for each test section. If you finish before time is up, go back and check your answers. Make sure that you have answered all questions. Erase any stray marks from your answer sheet.
