The Louisiana Great River Road has been designated a National Scenic Byway and as such is now linked to a 10-state corridor. Decade after decade, the “Father of all Waters”—themighty Mississippi—and the “Grandfather of all Byways”—the Great RiverRoad—bring more people together with their history, culture and naturalworlds than any other North American River and treasured road.
This collection of highways, local roads, and city streets providescontinuous routing of 717 miles. The route passes through 18 parishes, approximately 35 citiesand towns, and many historic places. There are sixdesignated bridge crossings and several byways—Tunica Trace, San Bernardo, Zachary Taylor Parkway – Louisiana’s Military History Byway and U.S. 80—intersect and provide interesting side tripsoff of the Great River Road. The State Capitol of Louisiana is the onlystate capitol located directly on the 10-state Great River Road route.
Items to be discussed at the meeting include:
- Route Signs that have been developed to mark the route
- Explore sample geographic itineraries
- What are the messages or themes that should be developed to tell the stories of the Louisiana Great River Road
