Course Catalog Description: / This course is designed to fulfill the needs of the Nursing andother Allied Health Science majors. The characterization ofbacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoans anddiseases caused by members within thesemicrobial groups is emphasized. Introductory immunology,bacterial metabolism, genetics, growth, chemical methods forbacterial control as well as the use of biochemical testing forbacterial genus/species identification are included. This course provides laboratory support for the concepts taught in lecture.

Prerequisites: / C or higher in BSC 1010C, an A in AP Biology in High School within the past 7 years, or satisfactory completion of the BSC 1010C credit by Exam

Course Objectives:

1.To provide a basic understanding of viruses,
bacteria, yeasts, molds, protozoa, chlamydia, rickettsia, and
helminthes.
2.To provide knowledge of various types of pathogens, their
characteristics, methods of identification, and life cycles.
3.To emphasize the cause, transmission, control prevention, and
treatment of disease.
4.To improve laboratory skills and to increase knowledge of the
techniques and use of equipment in microbiology.
5. Demonstrate competency with the principles of the scientific method, as well as
an appreciation for its purpose in obtaining results from a collection of
carefully recorded objectively based observations representing the current level
of knowledge as accepted by the scientific community.
6. Critically evaluate qualitative and quantitative data, applying inductive
reasoning to arrive at scientifically rational conclusions
7. Integrate basic concepts of chemical, physical, and biological processes into a
cohesive awareness of the interrelationships that exist between them.
8. Describe and identify components, assess and discuss results, as well as design
(and/or implement) scientific experiments. /

Attendance / Withdrawal Policies: / Punctual and regular attendance is essential in this course. Attendance will be taken at the end of class and attendance quizzes may be administered. Any class or lab session missed always reduces your opportunity for learning and usually has an adverse effect on any student’s grade earned in this course. It will be difficult for you to catch up especially if you miss ANYexercises in lab. Make-up labs WILL NOT be offered.
Audit:
A student may change from credit to audit only during the ADD/DROP period. Go to Admissions for proper forms. The course will appear on your record as an audit, but no college credit will be granted. Auditors cannot take lecture/lab exams, lab quizzes or the lecture final exam.
Withdrawal:
Students who wish to withdraw from the course may do so with a grade of “W” until the end of the withdrawal period for the term. It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from this class.

Lecture Exam (4 exams) = 400 pts
Quizzes (10 quizzes) = 100 pts
Group Journal Article Presentation = 50 pts
Virtual Unknown = 50 pts
Attendance = 50 pts
Laboratory Final = 50 pts
Final Lecture Examination = 200 pts
Total 900 pts /
Grading Scale: / For Lecture:
A.Four (4) lecture exams are scheduled.
B.A missed exammust be taken within a week of the scheduled exam. You will be allowed to take a missed exam once; a second missed exam will result in a ZERO.
C.Quizzes will be given during the first ten minutes of class. There are NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES!
D.A final exam will be given in lecture and will be cumulative.
E.The word “Tentative” means that all material covered, as well as test or quiz dates, can be subject to change by me in this course at my discretion.
For Lab:
- Lab quizzes will be given. Make-up quizzes will NOT be offered.
- The quizzes are timed---must finish it in the time I allot (10 minutes).Quizzes will be given in lab. They will be given at the beginning of the lab period. Be punctual!
