Orkney Badminton Association hosted one of their biggest competitions on Sunday 18th November. The Primary Schools Singles & Doubles has always been challenging due to the sheer number of players and officials involved. The Organisers extend a massive thankyou to everyone helping and taking part on the day.
Orkney Badminton are delighted to have R Clouston Ltd sponsoring the Primary School competitions, which also includes the team event held at the end of the season. A huge thank you to them for supporting and promoting this age Group Championships.
Games were timed up to the Finals, where 1 set to 21 was then played. Plate Competitions were also drawn up in each event for 1st round losers. 53 Players entered and entertained us with many close games. Orkney Badminton are delighted to see so many boys and girls playing at such a high standard in this age Group which is credit to the coaches & parents involved. 7 Schools were represented this year being Dounby(D), Glaitness (G), Firth (F), Stromness (S) St Andrews (StA), Papdale(P) and Orphir(O).
Girls Singles had 17 entries. 3rd & 4th place saw Ingrid Rendall(F) and Neve Hall (StA) playing off, with Ingrid emerging the winner 21-13 for 3rd place. Molly Cant(G) was the 1st seed and always going to be the one to beat and she held her form, coming through to play Freya Stevenson(StA) in the Final. Molly had the upper hand in the first half but Freya fought back, both girls showing good tactics, they were tied at 20 all and then had to play for 2 clear points to win. Molly then edged her way through to take the title 22-20. Girls Plate had close games before Adele Flett(G) and Tegan Spence(D) came through to play the Final, Both girls worked hard and Adele edged ahead to win 21-15. Girls Doubles had 8 entries. Neve Hall & Ann Lennie(StA) edged through 16-15 in a very close semifinal against Ingrid Rendall & Nicola Williams(F). 3rd & 4th place was between Allannah Johnston & Kiera Stevenson (G) and Ingrid Rendall & Nicola Williams (F), all 4 girls played well and Allanah & Kiera edged ahead to win 21-14. Molly Cant(G) & Freya Stevenson(StA) teamed up and were a very strong pairing, playing very well in all their games and proving too strong for everyone including Neve & Ann in the Final winning 21-8.Girls Doubles Plate Final was Megan Clouston(O) & Nicola Sutherland (S) against Ellis Tait & Tegan Spence(D) with all 4 trying their best to move the shuttle around. Ellis & Tegan won this 21-13.
Boys Singles had 36 entries with many close games. Sam Rendall(StA) and Tommy Ballantine (G) played off for 3rd place with Sam emerging the winner 21-18. Charlie Corsie was on great form, as was Reid Kemp, both coming through with good wins to reach the Final, both playing very well, moving the shuttle around before Charlie edged ahead to win 21-19.Boys Singles Plate had a very close Final also, before Simon Carmichael emerged the winner against Ross Sinclair(G) 23/21. Boys Doubles had 13 entries. 3rd & 4th places were contested by Sam Rendall & Glen Foubister(StA) and Ross Sinclair & George Bailey(G), Sam & Glen worked well together to take 3rd place 21-12. The Final between Ewan Flett & Reid Kemp(G) and Tommy Ballantine & Charlie Corsie(G) was another crowd pleaser with all the boys working hard to gain points and outplay each other. Ewan & Reid then came through to win 21-15. Boys Doubles Plate was Ryan Hourston & Andrew Seator against Morgan Flett & Craig Drury, all from Firth, with Ryan & Andrew emerging the winners 21-9.
