HOMECOMING

______

SPOTLIGHT ON OUTSTANDING ALUMNI – SHIRLEY “RED” S WILSON

Wilson '50 played center in football and was a catcher for the Wildcats' baseball team. He is one of two former Davidson standouts who have been selected to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. After graduating from Davidson, Wilson established an outstanding record as a football coach in high school and on the collegiate level at Duke and Elon. He was 74-32-2 at Duke and Elon. His Elon teams won six conference championships and advanced to the championship game of the 1973 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics playoffs. After Fayetteville High and Winston-Salem Reynolds High, Wilson had a record of 138-38-11, including two state championships and three undefeated teams. Red is retired in Pinehurst, NC. He is married to Katie and they have 3 children – John – 52, Cathy – 49, and Steve – 39. He can be reached at or phone 910-215-0629.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUTSTANDING ALUMNI – Malcolm M. Erwin '50

Erwin starred on Davidson's football and baseball teams. He was the leading rusher for the football team and was named the most outstanding athlete in football in 1949. After leaving Davidson, Erwin coached football and baseball at several colleges. His baseball teams at Johns Hopkins University, Lenoir-Rhyne College and The Citadel all won conference championships. In 1960 The Citadel was ranked 16th nationally. He was also an outstanding Southern Conference football official from 1964 to 1989. After a standout career at Greenville (S.C.) High, Erwin enrolled at South Carolina, where he started as a freshman in football and achieved all-state honors. His college career was interrupted by World War II and Erwin transferred to Davidson after the war.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUTSTANDING ALUMNI – Prosser S Carnegie ‘50

Carnegie's influence was evident at every turn when Davidson set a record in 1990-1991 for athletics fund raising with more than $600,000. At the 20-year mark in his career as Executive Director in 1972 the Wildcat Club (now DAF) had raised more than $6 million and Carnegie's contributions to Davidson had spanned nearly 50 years. He came to Davidson in 1946 after serving in World War II with the 30th Infantry Division. Carnegie was as four-year starter at offensive guard and defensive tackle. The 'Cats were sixth nationally in total defense in 1946 and fourth in 1947. He counts Oct. 8, 1949, among his proudest days. He played in the Wildcats' 20-14 victory over N.C. State at Charlotte. Only a few blocks away, his daughter, Helen, was born. Carnegie was one of several players who came to Davidson in 1946 with Coach Bill Story from Granby High School in Norfolk. The water boy of Carnegie's teams at Granby was Charles G. "Lefty" Driesell, who later coached Davidson basketball to a number of top 10 finishes in the 1960s. Sadly, Carnegie passed away in June of 1996 at the age of 70.
