Dear Member,

THE 2018 ANNUAL DINNER OF THE SOCIETY

The 2018 Annual Dinner, in the 110th year of the Derby Railway Engineering Society, will be held in the Garden, Wyedaleand Edale Rooms of the Hallmark Hotel (formerly the Midland Hotel), Midland Road, Derby, adjacent to the railway station, at 19.00 for 19.30 hrs. onFriday evening, 9 February 2018.

Our President this year is Jonathan Wragg, Group Operations Director, Rail & Transit Engineering with the major consulting company, SNC-Lavalin, based in Derby. Jonathan has spent all his working life in the railway industry and is a highly respected figure.

We are delighted to havePaul Robinson, General Manager of Nottingham Trams Ltd,as our principal speaker and guest this year. Paul started his railway career with British Railways in the electrical drawing offices at the Railway Technical Centre, moving later to BREL at St. Peter’s House; then as Managing Director of RFS Projects before moving to become Business Development Director with Bombardier Transportation. He later became the Managing Director with Alstom Transport in this country before being appointed to his present post with Nottingham Trams Ltd. I am sure that we shall have an informed and interesting address from Paul, with much of his career having been spent in the East Midlands. He was to have been our principal speaker last year, but was unable to attend at the last minute, due to unforeseen circumstances. We are very pleased that he has agreed to attend our Annual Dinner this year.

In addition and following our long-standing civic tradition, the Mayorof the City of Derby, CouncillorJohn Whitby will also be attending the Dinner and the Mayor will present an address.

A three-course dinner followed by coffee/tea and chocolates will be served. We have been able to hold the cost as at last year without any increase, at £35.00 per person, which includes a reception drink on arrival, providing an opportunity to meet with other guests before dinner is served. Our private bar will be open until 23.00 hrs.

Two bottles of house wine, one red and onewhite, will be provided on each table and the cost of these is included in the charge for the Dinner. If you wish to have an alternative wine or drink, please order this beforehand at the bar, when separate payment should be made.

Our Annual Dinners are always pleasant and enjoyable occasions, with a friendly and informal atmosphere and the Committee hopes that as many members as possible will be able to attend this event with their wives/husbands, partners and friends. It is emphasised that the Dinner is not confined to members only.

Dress for the evening is not formal, with a lounge suit or smart casual wear and tie suggested for the gentlemen and a semi-formal approach, with an evening dress or smart alternative suggested for the ladies. I hope that these thoughts are helpful to you.

If you have any queries about the Dinner or the menu, please contact me by telephone or e-mail, as shown above.

If you wish to attend the 2018 Annual Dinner, please complete the booking form enclosed and return it to me, on or before31 January 2018, at my address shown above.

Thank you very much for your support and if you are attending, the Committee hopes that you will have a very enjoyable evening.

David F.Russell,

on behalf of the Committee
