Creative Industries Research Network Southnow includes over 40 researchers from the four Hampshire universities as well as King’s College London who all share an interest in the creative industries and the creative economyin Hampshire and the Solent sub-region.

This was the third of four meetings which are taking place at the Hampshire universities. We met at Southampton Solent University in April and at the University of Winchester in July – the next meeting will take place at University of Portsmouth in 2016.

The aims of the network are to stimulate discussion between researchers with shared interests in the creative industries; to promote knowledge exchange between researchers, practitioners and policy-makers within the local region; and to promote new research collaborations between the HE sector and various actors in the local creative economy.

We distributed copies of Dr Roberta Comunian’s and Dr Abigail Gilmore’s Beyond the Creative Campusat the meeting. To find out more visit

  1. DISCUSSION THEME FOR MEETING 3: PLACES AND SPACES

Investigation into the connections between places and spaces, and the creative economy is a growing area of research. Much of the existing literature has focussed on the creative city, creative class, cultural quarters and creative clusters paradigms. Many studies have focussed on largeglobalcities and there is a need forfurther research intosmaller and less established contextsto inform practice and policy-making at different levels. Further research into the micro-scale dynamics of the creative economy and its connections toplaces and spaces is also required to informfuture management and development of the sector.
