PIANO II

Catalog Description:

21B – Piano II 1 unit

(May be repeated 3 times)

Development of skills in piano performance, notation, literature. Emphasis on further development of technique and performance. Prerequisite: Music 21A (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) or equivalent. 4 hours laboratory.

[Typical contact hours: 70]

Prerequisite Skills:

Before entering the course, students should be able to:

1.  define musical symbols and terminology;

2.  read piano literature;

3.  identify different formal structures of piano literature;

4.  demonstrate the classic approach to piano performance;

5.  construct chords;

6.  perform piano literature.

Expected Outcomes for Students:

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.  demonstrate facility on the keyboard up to three octaves;

2.  sight read piano literature;

3.  classify piano literature according to musical eras;

4.  demonstrate different playing techniques;

5.  construct four note chords;

6.  perform piano literature as a soloist or as a part of an ensemble.

a.  Prepare a simple accompaniment with the given melody.

b.  Memorize and prepare to play the G harmonic minor in three octaves .
