Studio Art

Overview

The Studio Art Class provides students with foundation studio experiences using a variety of mediums and areas of art exploration. Projects will be based on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Students will acquire a strong based of skills necessary for further level art courses. This course will provide students with the required one credit in art in accordance with the New York State Visual Arts Standards outline by the NYS Education Department and the NYS Board of Regents.

Course Goals And Objectives

  • Students will have opportunities to express themselves creatively through a variety of art mediums and experiences that will sharpen their awareness andperceptionof works of art created by others and themselves. These opportunities will permit them to develop their sense of self and aesthetic through created works of art.
  • Students will be able to recognize, define, analyze and apply learned concepts to solve complex questions.
  • Students will know, understand and make creative choices in the process of executing mediums.
  • Students will gain knowledge of how to use, care for and respect materials.
  • Students will learn about movements and recognize select famous works in Art History and be able to apply the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to those works.

Connections

Students will participate in art shows. Students will treat themselves, their peers, their teachers and the art rooms with respect. Students will learn valuable life and career skills while working individually or in groups, solving complex problems as a community, and working toward personal growth and artistic expression.

Course topics and Units

*Due to the creative nature in art and student-centered choices, projects may vary.

Topics: Line, Value, Texture, Color, Volume, Space, Form, Unity, Pattern, Rhythm, Proportion, Emphasis, and Theme.

Grading Criteria- 100 Points

Point Value / 10 Points / 10 Points / 20 Points / 30 Points / 30 Points
Rationale / Preparation for project and correct labeling of work. / Students have appropriate behavior in class and for materials while maintaining a clean workspace. / Project is creative and reflects the student’s own individual technique. / Student understood & accomplished the correct use of materials / Artwork is inline with project criteria, is well organized, neat & thoughtfully executed.

There will be a short midterm exam and final exam.1-2 homework assignments per quarter.

Extra help available during days with open art room lunch period & by 24 hour notice appointment.

Studio Art Contract

Come to class on time, be ready to listen/start as the bell rings.

Notalking during lectures, demonstrations or presentations.

Listen, watch, and follow directions.

Be prepared for class (any requested materials or Homework).

Proper use and clean up of materials. Abuse of materials will result in automatic detention and parental contact.

Have all due assignments completed by the end of each quarter.Utilize class time efficiently!!!!!!!!! Extra Help is available.

Class participation is an integral part of your grade.

NO CELL PHONES or ELECTRONIC DEVICES or USE OF CHROMOBOOK FOR ANY OTHER THAN A CLASS ASSIGNMENT

NO GUM, NO FOOD, DRINKS

Remember: I don’t give you detention……….. you earn that for yourself. Immediately with a major infraction by not adhering to the classroom rules, or eventually by earning 3 strikes due to a collection of minor infractions. Every quarter cleans the slate for strikes. A strike is like a reminder.
