Russ Reid Tape:

Russ Reid was the first advertiser to help Rescue Missions raise funds using direct mail marketing. Although some of the references in this tape are obviously dated, the information is critical while at the same time it gives us a glimpse into the beginning of direct mailing in our social service areas.

Please remember that what Russ talks about happened about 30 years ago. The success that Russ Reid had with Rescue Missions at this time, which he describes, was because he was the first to use direct mail for social service agencies to raise funds. We will hear later on in the course that direct mail is still critical, but less “successful” than it was then because of the increased competition with other agencies, and because those donors most likely to give have already responded to direct mail. So please keep that in mind.

Listen up to the time that they ask for questions. You’re welcome to listen to the rest of the tape also, but the questions on the study guide are taken from the first part of the tape.

8. What did you find most interesting about Russ Reid’s introductory story about how he came to be involved in advertising? Write three to four sentences about this.

9. What does Russ say about Madison Avenue advertising? How does he contrast this with the promise of the gospel? Write three to four sentences about this.

10. What is the foundational message of Rescue Missions and other Christian agencies that differentiates Christian faith-based organizations from other social service agencies? Write two to three sentences about this.

11. According to Russ Reid, what is public relations? What two examples does Russ use to explain how pubic relations can change society? Write several sentences giving your definition and explaining what and how public relations changed society’s perception on the two issues mentioned?

12. Russ provides several examples of organizations that have grown and those that have not. What is the difference between the two types of organizations? Why might people miss this opportunity? Write at least three to four sentences about this.

13. What is not negotiable in our message as we present it? Write a sentence or two about this.

14. Who does Russ suggest that we accept support from? What happens when unbelievers give to a Christian organization? Write three or four sentences about this.
