I WILL BE DRESSED FOR P.E. CLASS ON ______

~ 6 ~

A.  PHYSICAL EDUCATION OUTFITS

1.  REQUIRED UNIFORMS:

a)  SHORTS should be Kennedy white or brown shorts.

b)  SHIRT should be Kennedy white shirt.

c)  SHOES should be athletic style shoes. NO street shoes, boots, vans.

d)  SOCKS should be white sweat socks

2.  The required P.E. Outfit may be obtained at the student store.

3.  OPTIONAL UNIFORM: Because classes are held outdoors during the year, sweats clothes may be used. A sweatshirt of any color is permissible as long as it is worn under the Kennedy shirt. Kennedy sweat pants may be worn only over shorts so that they can be easily removed for testing situations.

4.  It is required that names be permanently marked somewhere on each item. The more prominently the name is displayed, the less likely the article will be picked up and worn by someone else.

5.  Students wearing improper outfits will be given a NON-SUIT for that period. Street clothes worn under P.E. clothes will result in a NON-SUIT and will lose the privilege of wearing sweats.

6.  Students should not lend clothing or shoes to other students. Too often the articles borrowed are not returned to the owner. The owner then may be subject to a NON-SUIT.

7.  Some good but used uniforms are available to students for a small fee. It you need some part of the uniform, see your P.E. instructor. Clothes should be washed weekly.

B.  LOCKERS

1.  All students are provided with a P.E. locker. Since the lockers are small, only P.E.clothes should be kept in them when the student is not in class. When the student is in class, all his/her street clothes and belongings should be locked in the locker. DO NOT LEAVE ITEMS LYING ON THE BENCHES. DO NOT GIVE YOUR COMBINATION TO YOUR FRIENDS, DO NOT SHARE LOCKERS WITH YOUR FRIENDS. Instructor will not give out assigned locker combination to anyone but the person assigned to that locker and you are responsible for it.

2.  LEAVE your valuables at home; Kennedy High School employees are not responsible for lost or stolen property in the locker room or P.E. areas. All lockers must be shut upon leaving the locker room.

C.  LOCKER ROOMS

1.  The locker room is the place to change clothes for P.E. classes or an athletic event. Students are not allowed into the locker room if they are not dressing for class. Students found in the locker room not dressing will be given lunch detentions and have locker privileges suspended.

D.  LOST ITEMS

1.  Lost and found items may be claimed in the P.E. office.

E. GRADING

Grades will be given according to the number of points a student earns during each activity. All students begin a new activity with zero points. Students earn points for attendance each day, dressing in the correct P.E. uniform, participation in activity each day and maintaining a healthy level of physical fitness.

F.  NON-SUITS

1.  Physical Education is a performance activity requiring daily participation. By it's very nature P.E. emphasizes such things as skills exercises, running and the like and requires positions on the ground, on the floor, and on apparatus. A P.E. outfit is required in order to allow for freedom of movement and participation, as well as for consideration of health and safety factors.

2.  Lack of a uniform or a part of a uniform (for example, lack of shoes) can be a hazard to health and safety. Therefore, students not having a complete uniform will be given a non- suit for that day and will not be permitted to participate in class. Non-suits MAY NOT BE MADE UP.

3.  Non-suits have a great affect on both the academic and the citizenship grades. Non-suit will drop your grade one full grade for each non-suit, in both academic, work habits, and cooperation.

Number / Academic / W.H. / Coop.
ONE / Non suit / All grades will not be affected
TWO / Non suits / grades cannot be above / B / S / S
THREE / Non suits / grades cannot be above / C / U / S
FOUR / Non suits / grades cannot be above / D / U / U
FIVE / Non suits / grades cannot be above / F / U / U

G.  Medical Excuses

1.  The school nurse must clear all Doctor and parent notes. The students are still required to dress for P.E. Make-up work will be required for each day missed.

H.  KHS P.E. MAKE-UP POLICY

A student who either is absent from class or is not participation in class is not earning participation points. That student has the option of making up the work missed and earning these points. (Truants and Non-suits may not be made up.)

Only one period may be made up per day for each P.E. class in which the student is registered.

Make-ups must be completed, i.e. made-up and reported to the teacher who in turn marks it off in his/her grade book. Your instructor will handle extended absences or absence during the last week of an activity on an individual basis.

Work may be made up in the following ways:

a.  Run a mile at lunch, before, or after school. See your instructor-first.

b.  Participate in an intramural activity at lunch.

c.  Attending or working at a school sporting event.

d.  Participate in an off campus activity.

The student may make-up one period with the approval of me in advance of participation in an off campus activity. The activity must be at least one hour in duration. The student must pick-up a signed KHS P.E. Make-up form prior to the activity. It must be planned, organized and/or supervised activity with adult supervision and verification. Parent verification for an activity will not be accepted. (Should the teacher feel the method of making up is being abused he/she may refuse to give approval. The make-up would then have to be done on campus.)

Examples of off campus activities that can be used for P.E. Make-ups.

Bowling at an alley.

Archery at the indoor range.

Skating at a rink.

Swimming at a city pool.

Skiing at one of the areas.

Racquetball at a health club.

Golf or miniature golf at a course.

Tournaments or meets may include such things as:

Tennis tournaments

Golf tournaments

Gymnastic meets

Church or city organized volleyball or basketball tournaments

High School athletic games, meets, or matches

Recitals or shows may include such things as:

Dance recitals

Horse shows

Marathons may include such things as

Bicycle marathons

Jogging marathons

Walk-a-thons

Such things as family hunting trips, students jogging on their own, or friends playing tennis at the neighborhood courts will not be accepted.

The student should obtain a KHS make-up form from his/her teacher prior to the make-up, and indicate in what activity he/she will participate. The teacher indicates approval by signing the form. The student takes the form to the authorities in charge of the activity for verification of his/her participation. This form is then returned to the teacher for P.E. credit as a make-up for one period.

I.  INJURIES

Students incurring any injury during the P.E. class should report the incident to their instructor immediately whether thought by the student to be serious of not.

J.  CITIZENSHIP (Refer to Student Handbook)

1.  Tardies: A student is tardy if he/she is not in locker room at the tardy bell or in his/her roll call order before roll call begins. Students have five minutes to dress for P.E. and ten minutes to dress for next class. Students tardy to class will not to be allowed to dress and be given a Non Suit for that day.

K.  ABSENCES

1.  Students acquiring many absences during the semester and not making them up can result in a failing grade.

2.  When a student is absent from class, they have 3 days to present a note to the attendance office to clear it. Students must clear their absence before school. Not clearing an absent result in those points not being able to be made-up and recorded as a truant.

L.  MISCELLANEOUS

Cell phones or Ipods are not allowed in school. These items will be confiscated and be returned to guardian the next school day. Only Kennedy High School hats are permitted in class, all others will be confiscated.
