Configuring Safari for your USB token or smart card 2032 (Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7)

If you’ve already installed your PKI Certificate and it isn’t working, you may need to configure your browser to successfully transmit and receive data. This involves checking to make sure your Safari is configured.

This step-by-step guide will help you if you use one of the following operating systems:

•  Windows XP

•  Windows Vista

•  Windows 7

This guide has been written using Safari 5. If your computer has a different version of Safari, there may be slight differences getting to the dialog box required.

Step 1: Inserting your USB token or smart card

Insert your USB token or smartcard into a spare USB port on your computer.

You’re ready to go once the light remains a constant green. This can take up to 10 seconds.

Step 2: Finding out your Safari version

Open your Safari Explorer browser.

Select Help then About Safari. The version number is displayed.

Step 3: Selecting your internet options

You should now be able to view the three Medicare Australia trust certificates in your Safari settings.

To confirm that the certificates have been imported correctly, open Safari and select the ‘Edit’ menu and select ‘Preferences’. The preferences dialog box is displayed.

Select the ‘Advanced’ tab and select the ‘Change Settings’ button. The Internet Properties box is displayed.

Select the ‘Content’ tab.

Select the ‘Certificates’ button. The Certificates dialog box is displayed.

Select the ‘Personal’ tab.

Your name will be displayed.

Select ‘Intermediate Certification Authorities’ tab

Two Medicare Australia Organisation Certificates with expiry dates of 2016 and 2022 will be displayed.

Select Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab.

One Medicare Australia Root Certificate with an expiry date of 2026 will be displayed. Select Close.

If the Intermediate/Trusted Root Certification Authorities aren’t displayed, you’ll need to install the chain of trust. Instructions are available at

Step 4: Setting the Privacy Settings

Select the ‘Security’ tab.

Make sure the tick box entitled Block pop-up windows isn’t ticked.

Step 5: Deleting the browsing history and cache

Select the History menu. Select Clear History.

Select the Edit menu. Select Empty Cache.

Close and reopen Safari.

Your USB token or smart card is now ready to use on your computer.
