Hours: Full-time, 40 hours/week, exempt

Overview of Position: The NJCEDV Executive Director is an exciting and challenging position for an individual who seeks the opportunity to affect change in New Jersey. The Executive Director is the chief administrative official of NJCEDV and reports directly to the Board of Directors. She/he is responsible for providing visionary leadership as well as operational expertise. As the chief spokesperson, she/he is to effectively communicate the mission and spirit of the movement against domestic violence and draw upon the critical nature of the issues to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization. The Executive Director is the principal resource to NJCEDV Board, staff, domestic violence programs, and all relevant governmental and community organizations. She/he is responsible to oversee and strengthen the organization’s infrastructure that supports the programs and its anticipated growth.

Responsibilities:

Administration

  1. Direct and supervise the daily operations of NJCEDV.
  2. Work closely with the Board Chair and the trustees in all areas of organizational structure, strategic and annual plans and the development of policies and procedures.
  3. Provide staff support to the Board of Trustees.
  4. Guide the expansion and development of the Board of Trustees.
  5. Establish technology policies and procedures.
  6. Oversee database operations for core statistics and collection of data as required by funders and respond to all regulatory mandates required.
  7. Provide support to staff who administer and are the liaison to the Domestic Violence Specialist certificate program to further its impact and stability.
  8. Plan and participate in agency staff and director’s meetings on a regular basis.

Fiscal Management

  1. Oversee the financial management of the organization in compliance with local, state, and federal standards.
  2. In collaboration with fiscal department, develop annual operating budget, submit to Finance Committee and the Board of Trustees for approval by end of fiscal year.
  3. Oversee implementation of finance policies and internal controls.
  4. Review and approve all expenditures, allocating costsas required by funders and auditors.
  5. Prepare for audits and provide adequate information and answer questions required

Human Resources

1.Responsible for staffing, recruitment, hiring, evaluation and release of all personnel, in consult with the Board as needed.

2.Maintain, implement and keep currentall personnel policies.

3.Ensure organizational supervisory structure for staff, interns and volunteers.

4.Maintain the confidentiality of all personnel files.

5.Conduct performance evaluations at least annually and ensure that supervisors conduct same.

6.In coordination with the accounting department, schedule, approve and coordinate staff benefit days and overseestaff benefits (health, life insurance, etc).

7.Monitor staff training and encourage participation in conferences/workshops as funds permits.

Planning

  1. Oversee research of current trends in programming (prevention & intervention) determine feasibility for the coalition.
  2. Participate in statewide and national planning forums to incorporate the needs of New Jersey victims of domestic violence.

Programming

  1. Provide leadership in developing and implementing programs and services consistent with NJCEDV’s missionincluding the priorities of social justice, economic empowerment and inclusion and access components. Encourage partnerships where possible.
  2. Provide support and technical assistance to the membership’s Executive Director’s and prepare for the bimonthly meeting.
  3. Develop projects of service to the residents of New Jersey, individuals, families and member programs. Respond to the programmatic needs of member programs.
  4. Oversee and ensure that Coalition projects are administered in compliance with local, state and federal standards.
  5. Evaluate the effectiveness of all programs against outcome measures on a quarterly/annual basis to ensure that programs are meeting the goals of the Coalition and its constituents.
  6. Ensure that the Coalition provides networking, advocacy and educational forums to support programs, incl. but not limited to: legal advocates, PALS/ children’s services, and shelters.
  7. Oversee the planning of the annual conference and strategize to enhance its reach and growth.
  8. Providesupport to the director of NJCEDV’s Training Institute and Annual Conference, to strategize and enhance its reach and growth. Coalition is responsible to offer trainings to professionals, government workers, law enforcement/judiciary, organizations, etc. to further the understanding of domestic violence and how best to address prevention and intervention.

Public/Community Relations

  1. Design and implement NJCEDV’s public relations, communications and marketing campaign, including: printed materials, website and social media communication, media and public speaking events.
  2. Serve as public face and primary spokesperson of NJCEDV and act as the principal liaison to the State of New Jersey officials, governmental departments, other agencies, organizations and national organizations. Delegate to directors or designee.

Fund Development

  1. Create a plan for resource development in conjunction with the Board and/or outside consultants. The plan should include fundraising strategies, cultivation, stewardship of private, corporate and foundation donors and a system of data collection
  2. Research, write or oversee the preparation of grants to support the organizations goals.

Advocacy

  1. Work with NJCEDV’s Director of Public Policy to determine legislative priorities.
  2. Build relationships and work closely with the NJ legislators and aides to effectuate laws that reflect the best interest of domestic violence survivors.
  3. Facilitate or participate in events that bring together NJCEDV, legislators, community and statewide partners in strategically building alliances and affecting change.
  4. Proactively respond to the media and/or public figures pertaining to issues related to domestic violence survivors. Work or partner with departments within government to review and comment on existing or potential regulations and policies as appropriate.

Miscellaneous:

  1. All other duties assigned or necessary to impact NJCEDV administration and programming.

Qualifications:

  1. Working knowledge of domestic violence and the social/feminist theory.
  2. Experience in an agency serving victims of domestic violence and/or Coalition experience preferred.
  3. Master’s degree in related field or Bachelors with demonstrated experience. A minimum of 5+ years of successful senior level/ managerial /supervisory experience including grants management, human resources, public relations and fund development.
  4. Understands the role of state domestic violence coalitions and domestic violence programs in the intervention and prevention of domestic violence.
  5. Has a democratic leadership style and values feminist ideals and workplace policy.
  6. Knowledge of state/federal legislative system.
  7. Committed to issues of social justice, diversity, cultural competency and antiracism/anti-sexism.
  8. Commitment to social justice and deep understanding of the intersection between ending violence and eradicating oppression.
  9. Experience with or willingness to learn to work with and support deaf and hard of hearing employees.
  10. Ability to set priorities, manage time, analyze and resolve problems, and make timely decisions and adjust tasks as necessary in order to meet deadlines.
  11. Excellent written and oral skills in all realms.
  12. Communicates with openness, respect, transparency and values teamwork.
  13. Ability to prepare, interpret and manage financial statements and budgets.
  14. Strong organizational skills and ability to successfully multi-task.
  15. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters.
  16. Demonstrate successful supervisory experience of seasoned staff.
  17. Commitment to work hours as needed to complete assigned responsibilities.
  18. Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development skills.
  19. Computer literate with knowledge of Word, Excel, and nonprofit software program.
  20. Valid NJ driver’s license. Access to transportation and the commitment to travel in and out of state as needed/required.
