Course Description
The course analyzes linguistic and cultural aspects of Italian media in the 21st century, since the language of mass media is a mirror that reflects contemporary Italian. Students will learn the communicative strategies that each medium uses to convey and deliver information. The course will be taught in Italian and will offer authentic contexts for the study of language. The course will focus on selected authentic materials as close as possible to Italian standards, but will be open to colloquialisms and regionalisms that are part of the general communication of the mass media. Students will improve vocabulary, grammar, and fluency in order to express their ideas and opinions. Students will work on advanced writing skills - argumentative writing, close textual readings, etc. - in order to be active in 21st century media communities. Students will produce a newscast at the end of the semester.
Core objectives
ITAL 3040 is a Language, Philosophy and Culture course in the University Core Curriculum. The designated objectives for this course are the following:
· Critical Thinking Skills (to include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information)
· Communication Skills (to include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and visual communication)
· Personal Responsibility (to include the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making)
· Social Responsibility (to include intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities)
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will:
· Acquire the vocabulary that allows them to discuss current issues and culture
· Improve their listening and writing skills while watching the news, listening to songs and writing about the topics connected to them.
· Reinforce their grammar knowledge.
· Be able to speak Italian with greater ease and fluency.
Readings:
Since there is no-specific book available, selected materials will be posted on Blackboard on a weekly basis.
University and Course Policies
Attendance policy: Regular attendance and active participation are mandatory. Each student will be allowed four unexcused absences during the course. After that, each additional unexcused absence will deduct 3% from their attendance grade. That is, a student with six unexcused absences will receive a 97% for attendance and so on.
Student Responsibilities: Be respectful. Be punctual. Class begins on time. Cell phones must be turned off during class. Do not engage in side-discussions during class as this distracts the instructor and fellow students. Be prepared, attend class and engage in class discussions and activities. Turn in all assignments on time.
Late assignment Policy: Papers will be penalized by 5% for every day that they are late.

Grading Scale and Evaluation guidelines
Students will be evaluated through their class participation, four written tests, an essay and an oral presentation of the paper to the class:

General grading criteria:
90-100 = A / An extremely good performance. Student has mastered the concepts and adds unique contributions to class discussions.89-80 = B / A very good performance. Student displays understanding in all areas of the class, and contributes successfully to class discussions.
79-70 = C / A generally satisfactory performance. A few insignificant flaws may appear, but overall, intellectually adequate performance. Student has a good understanding of the topic.
69-60 = D / A barely satisfactory performance. Contributes little to class discussions and lacks a clear understanding of concepts.
59-50 = F / An unacceptable performance. Student is unable to engage in class discussions and has little comprehension of the topic.
Method of evaluation
Students will work on weekly projects and will have frequent oral and written reports. They will also work on a final project that is a creation of a blog or a pod cast in Italian. Students will be evaluated based on class participation, weekly oral presentations, written assignments and reports on media and news. Answers will be evaluated on knowledge, coherence of arguments, clarity of exposition, critical understanding of materials, creativity. Grammar and spelling will be part of the evaluation too.
Attendance and contribution to class discussion: Students must show evidence of preparation and involvement in classroom discussions and activities. They need to come to class prepared and participate in activities. Absences will impact students participation score (see the attendance policy). Attendance is mandatory.
Oral Presentation: Each week students will present the results of a project. Students will be evaluated on adequacy of facts presented, clarity of the key point, and management of time assigned.
Compositions: Students will write a short essay at the end of each main section. Those brief compositions will be evaluated for coherence of arguments, critical understanding of materials, and creativity. Grammar and spelling will also be part of the evaluation.
Final: Students will be also evaluated on a Final exam that will be an oral presentation and a final written exam.
