Martin Ekers writes on behalf of the Colts Section.

A belated Happy New Year to you all.

I’m sure you are enjoying the nets at Writtle or Brentwood School and eagerly await the new season.

I’m inviting you to now renew your colt’sclub membership with us by no later than the 19th March 2011.

A new RE-APPLICATION isincluded. When your membership registration form has been accepted - you as parents/guardians of the child are then deemed as social members of Shenfield Cricket Club.

My apologies for the form being so much larger than usual, but we are following the guidelines prescribed, which are entirely geared towards safeguarding your child. In signing the form you are accepting the policies of the club, so please read carefully, as this includes our “Colts Code of Behaviour”, Managers Code of Behaviour“Safe Hands” policies, video and photography agreement and also the Club “Code of Conduct” which applies to all parents and children.

The club welfare officer (Alison Garrett) and her team of fellow welfare officers will be very visible to you and your offspring in their bright yellow tops. Please feel free to bring any welfare issues to their attention, or equally any another team manager or committee member.

If you do not renew by the 19th March, we cannot guarantee you a place, nor can we guarantee your membership card and lanyard (u11’s) will be ready for REGISTRATION NIGHT, Friday 1st April.

Club Colts Committee 2011

It is made up of all the team managers and assistants and facilitators of colts’ activities. Please visit to see a complete listing for the 2011 season. All the names and numbers of your colts committee will also appear in ourfixture cards to be issued at the start of the season.

I am extremely grateful to be starting the season with almost a full committee but we still need a couple more people to step up, specifically to help run the Under9s, so please get in touch if you can help. Many of you will also continue to assistthroughout the season at training, matchesand tournaments, both on the field and in the clubhouse and kitchen etc., as ever this is much appreciated. We will run a basic umpiring and scoring course at the club before the start of the season, so check your e mails.

Clubhouse

If you’ve not been at the club over the winter, the first thing you’ll notice is the new patio doors. A terrific asset to our facility, thanks to everyone for contributing (one way or another) to the refurb.

Shenfield CC 50/50 Club

We run a quarterly draw of lucky numbers, for just £1 a month, collected by direct debit, either quarterly (£3) or annually (£12). We have quite a few spaces, so please help the club finances and join up by contacting the club Treasurer or Chairman (details on the website).

Jack Petchey Awards

We are grateful to Stuart Borman for maintaining a fantastic relationship with this charitable foundation. We nominate young players throughout the year for their input/contributions to the club and in so doing, secure part financial funding for equipment and projects at the club, supporting the idea put forward by the person involved. Your colts committee will again be looking to ensure we nominate people on a regular basis - and news of these nominations/awards will again be featured on the club web-site.

Stuart has asked us to find a replacement for 2012, please let one of us know if you can take on this relatively undemanding task.

Quiz

Thanks to everyone who came and supported the evening, a fierce contest that was enjoyed by all.

A donation from the proceeds of the evening was made to Ovarian Cancer Action in memory of Elaine Nowlan.

Coaching

Indoor nets are keeping everyone busy, my thanks to Kate and Jenny for taking on the admin of this during the winter.

Throughout 2011 we intend to continue with our very successful 2010 format, with David Castell continuing as Coaching Co-ordinator, and we are thrilled that Gareth Fisher has agreed to return as our Head Coach for the season too. Our coaching camp dates will be published as soon as we know them and this will once again be open to non-Shenfield CC boys and girls too. We will try and ensure that our 2011 development programme is as thorough and comprehensive as it was in 2010, when we managed to utilise a huge bank of qualified coaches at the club throughout the summer. In addition to David and Gareth we hope to enlist once more Craig, Barry, Lloyd, Martin, Elliot, Owenand as many other qualified personnel as we seek to retain the ratio of players to coaches that we know is envied elsewhere.

League entries

We entered sides in the winter 6-a-side indoor at u15, u13 & u11 which are being enjoyed by all. Of particular note should be that the u11s remain unbeaten with just one game to play!

The u16s are once again entered into the County Matchplay (40 overs a side) competition, which is the premier competition of its type. Many boys from school years 9 & 10 (not just year 11s) get some great exposure to the higher standard of cricket in the longer format in this competition.

David Castell and Dannie Bamrah have kindly agreed to run this squad.

The u13s have had their entry to the Peter Coe Cup accepted and the boys will relish the exposure to the strongest clubs from right across the region in their longer format game.

We haveentered two teams at u15 and u13 and three teams at u11 into the CEDCB (Central Essex District Cricket Board)league competitions. Our A teams all play in the division one of each age group and our u15 and u13 B teams play in the division two“West” with the 2 B teams at u11 being placed one in East and one in West. In addition we have entered the permitted one team into each District cup competition and it’s worth noting that the four teams reaching the semi-final in each District cup then compete in the County cup for each age group. The u9s have entered the new District competition and we will look to host and then compete in some multi club team tournaments and we will strive to give all the boys as much cricket as we can. WE NEED A MANAGER OR TWO FOR THIS!

Courses

Essex Cricket Board regularly runs courses covering First Aid, and SPC (Safeguarding and Protecting Children) both of which form part of all coaching qualifications, even a Level One coaching assistant.

We are therefore more than happy to sponsor parents on these courses even if you do not then proceed to take the cricket coaching qualifications. Please contact our Club Welfare Officer Alison Garrett.

Football

This newsletter would be incomplete without my usual moan about football. All I ask is that you try and find a fair balance between cricket, which at MOST gets about four months a year (May, June, July & August) and football, that normally gets priority in the other eight months of the year.

Representative cricket

At all age groups managers are responsible for nominating boys for district trials and then the district sides feed the county age groups sides which are run as single year age groups. These names are taken from both club and school recommendations and please rest assured we as a club do our best to nominate players who we feel are of suitable ability. In recent seasons we are extremely pleased that we have seen several of our colts feature at both Centraldistrict and then in the Essex county sides, showing the strength of Shenfield and producing some very good performances.

RE–REGISTRATION 2011

Please now complete and return your membership renewal form. Please take time and effort to include clear and precise e mail addresses (multiple addresses are fine too) as this is now our preferred method of communication. The 2011 launch night party (for all colts and parents) and registration evening (for u11s) is Friday 1stApril from 6:00 p.m.
