Chair Report (Jean Ippolito):
Deferred until discussion of task force
APC Report (Jene Michaud):
The APC’s primary task this semester has been to consider the T&P guidelines recommended by the SEC and approved by the faculty in the Spring of 2014. The document was delayed in being submitted to the union, so the APC thought it inappropriate to comment until UHPA reviews it.
There were some unapproved edits made to this year’s catalogue. There seems to be a computer glitch in automatically generating the catalogues from the online version.Jene Michaud will follow up with Shelby Wong and Dolly Roth.
CRC Report (Chris Lauer):
The CRC approved 96 course modifications, new courses, program modifications, and new programs this semester as well as new liberal studies templates for Community Health Education and Health Care Administration. We have four courses outstanding to vote on as well as 3 liberal studies degrees besides the pre-approved Health Care Administration LS majors.
Old Business
Division Chair Elections (Randy Hirokawa):
The proposed procedures were approved by the union and all relevant parties. The procedures will be followed this semester for the Humanities Division elections.
New Executive Policy on Consensual Relations:
President Lassner is seeking responses from all faculty bodies by November 30th.
Review of small programs proposed by the state legislature and modified by the all-campus Senate (Randy Hirokawa):
The policy is not intended to eliminate programs, but to review them.
Reorganization:
An online poll was sent to all CAS faculty members. 73% of the 37 faculty members who responded supported creation of a task force on reorganization. The administration is reluctant to appoint a task force on its own initiative and will only follow a recommendation for reorganization if there is a broad consensus in favor. Various members noted the small number of respondents to the faculty poll but surmised that a task force would be able to collect more data on faculty needs and opinions. Student input would be important in the creation of a task force. Faculty Congress should thus consider appointing a student representative to the task force.
Motion to approve the circulated Motion for the Creation of a Campus-wide Task Force to Study the Reorganization of Academic Units at UH Hilo (seconded). Motion passes 8-0-0.
Friendly amendment: CAS Senate recommends that at least two representatives from each CAS division be on the task force. Amendment Passes 7-1-0
