NEXT MONTH'S GUEST SPEAKER -- LES WALKLING FAIPP

Our Guest Speaker for the May meeting will be that well known and popular Professional Photographer, Les Walkling. A few years ago he was a speaker at Camberwell and his interesting and informative presentation I will never forget. I hope you all appreciate Les giving up his precious time to further educate us on our favorite pastime of Photography. Below are some interesting excepts from his web site.

Before turning to fine art photography in 1975 I had been studying science and philosophy at MonashUniversity in Melbourne, Australia. Largely self taught as a photographer, I had the privilege in 1981 and 1982 of living in the USA supported by Australia Council Arts grants, studying and working with the artists Emmet Gowin and Frederick Sommer, who were my most defining and critical intellectual

influences at that time.

I have exhibited widely, including the retrospective one-person show ‘So to Live as to Dream’ at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1990. My work is also represented in many public collections including The Center for Creative Photography, Arizona, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, and The National Gallery of Victoria.

I presented my first photography workshop in 1977 and have conducted regular digital photography courses since 1993 through the Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP), and training seminars and professional development programs for the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), the Australian Commercial and Media Photographers (ACMP), and many of our cultural institutions including the National Gallery of Victoria, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library of Australia, the National Archives of Australia, and the Australian War Memorial.

My first university appointment was in 1983 as a lecturer in drawing, and subsequently in fine art photography and media arts history and theory. I am the former Program Director of Media Arts at RMITUniversity, Melbourne, Australia (1993 – 2005), and a Senior Research Fellow and Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant recipient in the School of Art (2006-2010). I supervised over fifty MA and PhD research candidates to successful and timely completions. In 2011 I took early retirement from RMIT in order to remove all administrative constraints from my research and practice.

In 2012 I was awarded the title ‘Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography’ (FAIPP) in recognition of my contribution to the worlds of professional photography.

INTERNATIONAL CLUB CHALLENGE

The 13th May sees another step along a path that started several years ago. Over the last year or so we have been calling for entries for an open contest between Camberwell (Australia) Camera Club and two Camera Clubs from the UK – Leighton Buzzard Photographic Club and Beacon Camera Club. All the selected entries have been before two judges – one from the UK and one from Australia – the scores have been totalled and all will be

revealed at a special Club night on the 13th May in the Camberwell RSL Hallstarting at 8.00pm. Note that this is not the normal club night but a special night for International competition. So come along on the 13th and enjoy the work of three Camera Clubs. Compare the images from Australia and the UK and check the quality of the work. All this helps us benchmark our club against clubs from around the world.

McCELLAND SCULPTURE PARK GALLERY

On Tuesday 2nd April Camberwell and Melbourne members attended an outing to the above Gallery organised by Melbourne Camera Club. Of the fifty plus outings I have attended over the last ten years this one could be the most memorable. Not only because of the unique display of art but because for the first time in my life I can remember, I became completely lost.

After a very pleasant morning coffee in the gallery cafe we were left to our own devices to roam the centre. After viewing the rather unique exhibits it the two ArtGalleries I proceeded to explore the outdoor Sculpture exhibits. One of the most unusual aspects of this park was the complete absence of any direction signs for visitors. At the cafe Norm, our outing organiser, explained that the sculpture display was on the east side of the gallery building so I headed in that direction. I found a gate, again no direction signs, and followed a walk track into the bush.

Here I will pause to quote a paragraph in a brochure I later picked up. "The McCellandPark has over 100 permanent outdoor sculptures located within diverse settings of open spaces, bracken paths, tee-tree forests, heathlands and lakes."

As I walked along this bush track I came across an open clearing with a spectacular sculpture in the centre. This circular cleared area containing a sculpture was continually repeated with the walking track curving in all directions through the scrubs/trees and the sculptures were successfully hidden so they never became visible until you were within a few metres. After photographing some two dozen interesting works of art. I was expecting the track to lead me back to the Gallery building. This was not happening so when it became close to the arranged time for lunch at the cafe I began looking for a way back. Eventually I came to a sign that said "Emergency exit this way" which I decided to follow. Some five minutes later I arrived at a locked gate that led back to the main road. Turning back I began walking along another path that I believed was in the correct direction and was fortunate enough to find one of the sculptured I had previously seen. Using this as a guide I set out to retrace my previous steps and after a ten minute walk with a few false turns was much relieved to find myself back at the main building and in the cafe some twenty minutes late.

Although I was late for lunch I was quite happy that I had seen most of the sculptures and was satisfied with a successful visit. However on leaving after a very satisfying meal I picked up a brochure and discovered that the park covered 16 hectares (40 acres) and my twenty sculptures I had found was less that a quarter of

the total of 101 available and I had covered only a small portion of the total parks area. I still have no idea how long it would take to see all the available works of art but I will return one day with plenty of time and give it another try.

AV GROUP REPORT – MARCH 2013

We were extremely lucky to have Barb Butler as our presenter at the AV group meeting in February. She showed us 14 of her wonderful creations spanning many years of participation in Audiovisual production. One of her AVs ‘A Place for Reflection’ was recently awarded a Bronze Medal at the XXXIII Pomeranian Meeting with Diaporama in Poland.

Tonight’s challenge was ‘Portrait (People/Animal)’ and we saw 4 new presentation on this topic: ‘Katy’s Journey’ by Don Weston, ‘The Portrait – Mr Montgomery’ by Colin Hunter, ‘Tattoo’ by Wolf Marx and ‘Gorilla Portraits’ by Ruth Goldwasser. Our new club member Diana Close also brought her AV ‘Peonies’ which we enjoyed viewing.

Charles Hulse, an international award winning AV maker from Adelaide kindly allowed us to watch his wonderful presentation ‘Uprising’ which was also shown at the recent Adelaide International AV Festival. It is a moving story of the fight for freedom and liberation of Hungary in 1956 from control by the Soviet Union.

Our next meeting will be on May 8th where we will view more award winning AVs from the Adelaide Festival and on July 17th we have our next AV challenge ‘60’ to coincide with the 60th anniversary of our camera club. We look forward to watching the creative way that members interpret this topic. Ruth Goldwasser

The Café can also be accessed from 101-103 Lt Bourke Street (it is on the right as you enter the Food Court from street level). We are due at the Centre at 10:30.

The Heritage Centre houses the original studios of the Limelight Department, which was formed in 1892, to produce magic lantern slides of Biblical stories. It was also run as a commercial photographic studio and the initial kinematographic

studio. The Department quickly became a pioneer

and driving force in the Australian film industry. In May 1901 it was commissioned by the Victorian

Government to film the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George V and Queen

Mary, for the opening of the first sitting of the Commonwealth Parliament at the Exhibition Buildings.

The Centre has original equipment from this era on display as well as examples of their magic lantern slides. We will be given a guided tour and presentation. This visit will provide a unique insight into the early days of photography in Australia. It would be appropriate if we were each to make a small donation. Norm
