Texas-based Donruss rushed into production with this set on the heels of the decision in the anti-trust lawsuit Fleer had won against Topps. The cards were filled with mistakes, printed on flimsy stock, and the design seemed uninspired. There were color problems, and the company didn’t have a good enough selection of photos, so some of the photography is awful. Some of the best photos were reportedly taken by a young photographer named Keith Olbermann. The set is historic, as it was the first ever by Donruss. Because there was so much competition among Fleer, Topps, and Donruss; and because of the baseball strike that summer, there are fewer 1981 Donruss cards out there than there are of Topps cards from 1976, 77, 78, 79, and 80. In spite of this scarcity, this set is inexpensive for collectors and contains many great Hall Of Famers.

Facing competition for the first time in two decades, Topps failed to rise to the occasion, producing the worst set in its 30 year history. Printed on poor quality cardboard and sporting a crummy-looking “cap” design, the 1981 Topps set is the least admired of the decade. Key rookies in the set are Tim Raines, Harold Baines, Kirk Gibson, Fernando Valenzuela, and Jeff Reardon. Considering that both the Fleer and Donruss sets had him, you would think the 1981 Topps set would feature a card of Danny Ainge. But no. Overall, the 1981 Topps set was just another underwhelming, half-baked effort. However, because fewer of these were sold than in any year going back to 1977 (due to competition and the players strike), they are scarcer than more high-priced sets. That scarcity and the low price are the primary reasons this set is collectible.

Topps Traded:Topps also issued an update set of 132 cards called “Topps Traded”. Ainge made that set, which can be found at the end of this list, cards # 727-858
