KIT ON GLOBALIZATION

From mid-May to November 2004

Council of Europe

It is to create a thematic kit on “Globalisation”, which has been an important issue for CCIVS since many years. The kit aims to render the issue of globalisation tangible and relevant for grassroots organisations and to provide practical tools in order to run activities around the issue with volunteers and the local population all over Europe and beyond.

The kit will provide background information on the definitions and current discussions of the issue of globalisation and will introduce the various players in the "global game" and to provide tools (games, debates, exercises) adaptable to the various contexts of non-formal education. The tools shall be accompanied by introductory remarks, a description of the activity itself and instructions for debriefing.

Call for the prep.team for the kit of globalisation will be sent out soon from the secretariat. We encourage especially the people who took part in the workshop of Globalisation during GA2001 to join !

THE SEMIAR : “VALUES AND VIOLENCE”

VOLUNTARY SERVICE AND CONFLICT PREVENTION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

September 2004, 5 days

Morocco

Council of Europe

The seminar aims toexplore the possibilities to contribute to a culture of peace and dialogue through non-formal education in general and voluntary service in particularand toexplore the differences in traditional gender based value education in Mediterranean societies and the lessons that can be drawn from it. It aims also to discuss the global mechanisms leading to the current power structures in the Mediterranean and beyond.

Through the seminar, we would like to concretely explore the basis of peace education (which are the values at stake? how to transmit them? how are gender related differences in the approach to violence transmitted and how can they be explored positively? how can inter-religious dialogue contribute to peace education?) and to share good practices among organizations to develop a methodology and tools to transmit the insights gained to the participants of the organisations activities and the local communities they work with.

For more information on this project, please do contact CCIVS secretariat.

ACTIVITIES PLANNED TO HAPPEN FROM NOW TO THE GA(TO BE CONFIRMED):

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINING IN AFRICA

June, 2004

Togo

The project is to organise trainings for trainers on the information technologies focusing the needs and use for the voluntary service organisations in Africa. The training is planned to be held in Togo, West Africa. The aim of the training is to increase the knowledge on how to use ICTs for the specific purpose of our organisations and capacity to train others upon return in each country. Also to set up/ strengthening of a regional network, which allows a common presentation to the outside and a better communication within the network.

A questionnaire will be sent to all organisations in the region concerned to find out which experience they have with new technologies, which needs they have in terms of knowledge and material, and of what kind of material they dispose. Based on result of questionnaire, propose a ten day /two week training program for trainers/ people with a minimum background in ICT and active in their organisation in the country.

THE IMPACT OF VOLUNTARY SERVICE IN CONFLICT AND POST-CONFLICT SITUATIONS: TRAINING WORKCAMP AND SEMINAR

Nairobi, Kenya, November 2004

Participation Programme – Unesco

It is the third project proposed to Unesco in the frame of Participation Program following the two recent activities which aimed at reinforce national and international youth voluntary service organisations in their role in conflict resolution and the promotion of a culture of peace.

This project has aim of developing more specific ideas of how volunteers can be effective in conflict and post-conflict situations. Such ideas may include: various kinds of workcamps with participation by volunteers from different, often conflicting, backgrounds; the creation of mixed teams to help with reconstruction work; or community social development. Based on the previous experiences mentioned above this project will have a strong focus on the Great Lakes region and the possible actions youth and voluntary service organisations can undertake there.

The seminar will allow the sharing of good practice with organisations from other countries experienced in reconciliation through voluntary service, in running programmes in refugee camps and for returned refugees and in other projects that have been implemented in a context of conflict or post-conflict. At the same time the project aims at creating and reinforcing networks of organisations active in the field of conflict resolution. Thus an important aspect of the seminar will be the presence of several experienced participants from various Balkan countries, where a voluntary service network has been set up (SEEYN).
