EcoBot

Humble ISD has again decided to participate in the EcoBot Challenge. Each school in has 5 Lego Mindstorm Robot kits to manipulate this year. This is our third year to participate. I can’t wait for the competition this year!

As teachers we want our students to think critically, solve problems independently, and get along with others. The academic, social, and personal benefits of EcoBots occur while students seem to be playing with robots. In order to program the robot, students use math, spatial, obstacle, critical thinking, and trial and error. In order to work as a successful team, students learn cooperation, assertiveness, communication skills, and compromise. Their self-concept will never be the same!

I feel very lucky to have come across upon EcoBots. I look forward to seeing what our kids will accomplish.

What is an EcoBot?

An EcoBot is a Lego Mindstorm Robot . . . an actual computer that connects with Legos. The robot is programmed on a computer then downloaded to the robot. Each robot costs about $350.00.

The EcoBot Challenge

Sometime in April or May, five teams of four students each will compete at Regional EcoBot Challenge at Atascocita High School. The competition is a series of missions that the students will have to accomplish within 90 seconds as well as a marketing plan presented as a PowerPoint. It is an all-day event that is VERY EXCITING. Parents and siblings are invited to attend.

Who May Participate

Twenty Fifth grade students will be selected to participate in the EcoBot Challenge. To be eligible, students must fill out an application and be available after school. The twenty students will be chosen based on their application submission. Once teams are established, students will work after school on Thursdays from 3:15- 4:15 to prepare for the Challenge. One of the requirements to be a member of the EcoBot team is to maintain and E or S in conduct throughout the year and have passing grades on all report cards. Being an EcoBot member is a privilege. A member may be removed at any time for unacceptable behavior that occurs in the classroom or while practicing in the lab. If a team member does not meet these requirements, he or she will be removed from the team and not allowed to participate.

I would LOVE to have snacks to share with students who stay after school. Any snack donation would be so greatly appreciated (popcorn, pretzels, and crackers). I appreciate all the support and patience you can muster!

Thank you,

Stacey Ward
