As a Member of My Class, You Will Be

Dear Student and Parent(s)/Guardian(s)

I am excited about the upcoming semester and to have this opportunity to teach you. ICM is an elective math course unique to Wake County, designed for students who have successfully completed Pre-calculus, or AFM. My overall objective is to better prepare you for math courses that you will take in college. This ICM class will include the following units: Sets & Counting, Probability, Statistics, Matrices, Functions & Limits, Financial Literacy, and Derivatives.

Your success and academic growth in my class are very important to me and I intend to do my best to help you be successful in this course. I am dedicated to teaching, guiding, and supporting you in a way that will prepare you for your future academic endeavors and to help grow as a student. Ultimately, your attitude and effort will help determine your level of achievement. So decide now that you will be successful. Then allow your actions to reflect that decision by giving your best every day!

As a member of my class, you will be:

  • Working collaboratively with your peers
  • Exploring real world applications of mathematics
  • Making connections between Algebra, Geometry, and other subjects
  • Using technology to explore, investigate, and solve real mathematical problems.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

  • RESPECT yourself, others, and your school at all times
  • Take responsibility for your learning and your actions
  • Be physically and mentally prepared for class
  • Consume food and beverages in the cafeteria only
  • Comply with all SRMHS and Wake County policies

Supply List

•3-ring binder

• notebook paper

• pencils

  • graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-84 recommended)

Technology: Students at SRMHS are required to have access to a TI-83+ or 84+ graphing calculator. This calculator is an excellent investment in your child’s education and will be an integral part of all class and homework assignments. These calculators will meet the requirements for all math and science courses offered at SRMHS and also for most college courses.

Testswill be given covering each chapter. Tests will be announced, so please pay attention! If you are absent for a test, it must be made up!! You will be responsible for scheduling a time with me to make up your test!!! A unit test grade will replace any quiz grade in the same unit that was lower. All students can retake a test, but they must complete test corrections before being given the opportunity to retest. There is not a retake option for any open note/book tests or take home tests. A RETAKE TEST grade will not replace a lower quiz. All test are expected to be completed within the class period the test is given, unless otherwise indicated on an IEP or 504 plan.

Quizzes will be given periodically throughout each unit and may or may not be announced. If you miss a quiz, you do not need to make it up – you will be exempt.Quizzes cannot be retaken. However, quiz grades will be replaced with the corresponding unit test grade if the test grade is higher.

Homework will be assigned daily, checked for effort and completeness. Homework is a very important factor that will contribute to your success. I will check to see that all problems assigned have been attempted, which means work is provided. NO work, NO credit. All homework will be recorded on a stamp sheet. Students must keep up with their stamp sheet! DO YOUR HOMEWORK! It makes a difference.

ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP WORK

Regular attendance is essential to your success. Please don’t miss class. When you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to copy the notes, complete the homework assignment(s), and take any tests that you missed. If you miss a test, you must sign up with me to take it after school. Unless you ask me for your make-up work, I will assume you got it from a classmate. Homework that was due the day you were absent will be due the day you return. It is your responsibility to turn in this assignment during homework checks.

INTEGRITY

Per School Board Policy 6445, any student who engages in or attempts to engage in plagiarism, falsification, violation of software copyright laws, or violation of computer access shall be subject to disciplinary action. The following actions are specifically prohibited:

Cheating – This act includes giving or receiving any unauthorized assistance on academic work such as homework, tests, quizzes, projects, etc.

As a teacher actively involved in your education, I agree to this welcome letter and will do my best to help you succeed in my class. Let’s have a great year! Mrs. Walters

Dear parents:

To ensure that your student reaches his or her fullest potential in my course, cooperation is required from every student and parent in the class. If you have an email account, please provide it to me so that you can receive updates throughout the semester. Also, please ask your student what he/she is learning in class! This practice of discussing math at home will encourage the student to persevere in problem solving, communicate about mathematics in the real world, and cement in his/her mind the mathematical understandings that he/she has learned in class.

The parent/student contact sheet is separate. Please return to Mrs. Walters by August 4th. If you have any additional questions please feel free to email me.
