Equipment/Supplies: Specimen container as required by the laboratory and test ordered (yellow-top sodium polyanetholsulfonateVacutainer tubes or aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles), blood culture skin prep packs (or 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes and povidone–iodine solution swabs or towelettes), venipuncture supplies (see Chapter 41), gloves, biohazard sharps container; biohazard waste container

Using skin preparation kits or supplies, apply alcohol to the venipuncture site and allow it to air dry; applypovidone–iodine prep in progressively increasing concentric circles without wiping back over skin that is already prepped; let it stand at least 1 minute and allow it to air dry without touching the skin after preparation / / /
