Agenda:

  1. Meet and get to know each other.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • The participants all introduced themselves, giving their name, company, and involvement with gas well production.

  1. Initial discussions.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • We agree to have two days for the Seminar, with one day for Continuing Education courses and one day for Technical Presentations.
  • We will need to limit the Seminar to a maximum of about 300 participants.
  • We actually expect to have on the order of 100 – 200 attendees.
  • We need to consider the possibility of having simultaneous sessions to cover both low rate and high rate wells. However, the general consensus is that we should have one general session, rather than parallel sessions, unless there are too many high-quality presentations to fit in one day of presentations.
  • We can consider using Matt Vavro to teach a course. This may not fit the plan for the first year, but could be a potential in the future.
  • It would be nice to have hands-on aspectsin the training courses, when this is feasible.
  • We would like to have more than two courses.
  • 1 Day, General Gas Well Deliquification, coordinated by Jim Lea.
  • 1 Day, Plunger Lift, coordinated by Lynn Rowlan.
  • ½ Day, Sucker Rod, coordinated by Norm Hein.
-½ Day, Chemical, coordinated by Brad Davison with Multi Chem,
  • We need to offer a Continuing Education Certificate for those who attend the courses and the Seminar.
  • We can have technical papers and/or breakout sessions on other methods of artificial lift: e.g. gas-lift.

  1. Visit the facilities at Marietta College where the event will be held.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • We visited the potential class rooms, exhibit hall, lecture halls, etc.
  • There are several options.
  • We will make decisions when we know more about the actual courses, numbers of attendees in each course, number of attendees for the Seminar, etc.

  1. Discuss the most important issues facing gas well operations and deliquification in particular, in the Appalachian Basin area. These will help form the basis for the major topics to be addressed in the Seminar.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • There needs to be a focus on horizontal wells. There are no people who can teach a course on horizontals at this time, but we can solicit Technical Presentations, have a Breakout Session, etc.
  • There are many very low rate wells, e.g. 15 – 30 MCF/Day and a few gallons of liquid per day.
  • There are many new wells, in the Marcellus Shale, that produce several MMCF/Day.
  • Some wells are individually metered; some use well test facilities.
  • A typical Operator is responsible for 100 – 200 wells.
  • Automation is used on the Marcellus Shale, on multiple wells drilled from pads. This is referred to as the “electronic well concept.”

  1. Discuss the tentative agenda for the Seminar. A copy is attached.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • We discussed the tentative agenda.
  • We want to keep the Panel Discussions.
  • Several changes were made in the original draft agenda; see the revised agenda which is attached to these minutes.

  1. Discuss potential instructors, authors, breakout session leaders, exhibitors, keynote speaker, etc.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • We discussed potential candidates to be the Keynote speaker. Possibilities include:
–Someone from the Pennsylvania Governor’s office.
–Dr. Scott Tinker, Texas State Geologist and Univ. of Texas Professor.
–Someone who is very actively involved in leadership in the Appalachian Basin area.
–Steve Coleman, who developed the Coleman method to determine critical gas flow velocity.
  1. Discuss other potential people to be included in the Steering/Planning Committee.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • Each participant was asked to nominate other potential members of the Steering Committee, if there are pertinent people who can contribute.

  1. Agree on some roles and responsibilities for members of the Steering/Planning Committee.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • The following roles and responsibilities for the Steering Committee members were identified:
-Attend Steering Committee meetings and teleconference calls.
-Chair one Technical Session or Breakout Session.
-Advertise the Seminar among colleagues, customers, suppliers, etc.
-Solicit Technical Presentations on the topics defined in the Seminar agenda
-Solicit Exhibitors.
-Solicit Sponsors.
  1. Try to gain a tentative idea of the likely number of attendees for the Seminar.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • The general consensus is that it should be possible to have between 100 and 200 participants.
  • There could possibly be as many as 300.
  • If we are able to have a strong focus on deliquification of horizontal wells, this could be a “huge” draw.

  1. Once around – any new business

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
  • Consider a donation to the Marietta College Student SPE Chapter, rather than a scholarship. A donation in lieu of a scholarship is not feasible. However, there may be other ways to support the student chapter. They plan to take a number of facility and students to the 2010 SPE meeting in Florence, Italy.
  • How will we advertise the Seminar?
-It can be advertised via the local SPE groups.
-Marietta College can do local e-mail blasts.
-ALRDC can send e-mail blasts.
-Echometer can send e-mail blasts.
-Each company can advertise the Seminar with their internal communications systems.
  • What should this event be called?
-It is agreed to call it the“Appalachian Basin Gas Well Deliquification Seminar.”
  • When the minutes are distributed:
-Attach registration forms to the minutes.
-Send the ALRDC web site link with the minutes.
  • Gifts for speakers.
-We will have nice gifts for each speaker, and for the Keynote speaker.
-The possibility of a replica of a “yellow dog” cable tool drilling system light was mentioned.
  • Other comments:
-The kick-off meeting was great.
-It was good to meet everyone.
-It was good to have industry representatives meeting on campus.
  1. Agree on the timing of the next meeting, which will be by teleconference.

Minutes: Oct. 21, 2009
The next meeting will be a teleconference call. It will be on Wed. Nov. 18, 2009, 10:00 am EST. The telephone number will be: 877-226-9790. The access code will be: 8246385.
