Apologies for the delay in sending this months ‘Tales'. Autumn winds and rain came early and the lakes seem to have moved seamlessly into crystal early autumn mode. Water is as gin! Only not so tasty. The fish are in great condition and we have stocked our last batch for a few weeks. The tiddlers are coming on well and will be out sooner than we planned. Overall we are pleased with the way our first year as fish farmers has progressed. We have learned a lot but seem to have found a system that works for us.

Fly of the Month

The buzzer – of various colours – was the fly of the month for August. The ‘damsel nymph’ came a close second, but that could cover a lot of the fly box, as could ‘dry fly’ which was runner-up. But they were all successful. We are beginning to see Daddy Longlegs now. There have been a few catches on both wet and dry patterns, so take your pick and be ready to change.

For any novice, but would-be experts out there, we have an Improvers day on the 12th Sept, at which there will be a fly-tying demo and focussed coaching on fishing with particular flies to suit the day/season. Colin Harvey will be running this. Phone asap to book your spot if you are interested.

Fly patterns for September follow the Daddy/Damsel route, with buzzers and bloodworms for variety!

Catch of the Month – August

There have been a good range of trout out of the lakes last month. Acorn Lake has given up a few, though is still fished less than Oak Tree Lake, not that Acorn lovers mind!!

Top Rainbow of the month of August was caught by member Doug Rushton; a 3 ¼ lb beauty tempted by a dry ant. Well done Doug, what a catch!

Runners up are Jim Murphy, ‘Sammy’ Schooling, ‘new chap’, and ‘Colin’ all with 3lb fish. And best junior catch goes to M Langard, aged 13, with a 2lb 9oz lovely; cast, hooked and landed solo – and he beat Grandad. Well done!

We have had a few brownies out – the biggest brown catch is shared between ‘Sammy’ Schooling and Ivor Alchurch, both of whom hooked a 6lb monster within 2 days of each other. We fear it may have been the same fish as one of that size was found dead only the day after, and the guardian of the inlet pipe is no longer there.

If you think you have a brown or tiger on the end of your line, bully it in asap. A fight, particularly in warmer summer water, can prove too much for their hearts.

My interpretation of the situation for September is:

Settled conditions becoming established, with some cool misty starts followed by dry and fine days. Overnight temperatures will be chilly but rising nicely during the day. The latter part of the month may be warmer and still settled – is that an Indian Summer?

These are in and now being modelled on a daily basis by us. We also have a number of green caps with the logo on. They look very smart and do a fine job of stopping the fly in the back of the head syndrome!
