AP United States Government and Politics Summer Assignment

Dear Students,

Welcome to AP U.S. Government and Politics! You will have the opportunity to earn college credit for this course through the College Board at the end of the year by taking the AP Exam in May of 2017. This is a very rigorous and fast-paced course. It is important that you are aware of the yearlong commitment you are about to undertake as a student of this course. Please make sure to complete the summer assignment so that you will be ready to fully and successfully participate when class begins for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year.

AP Government requires different thinking and writing skills than you used in U.S. History. Writing for government requires the understanding and analysis of abstract concepts and principles. You will depend more on your interpretation of facts and events than focusing onthe chronology of those facts and events. You will have the added benefit of taking the course during the 2016 presidential campaign. Throughout the year you will become aware of politics in general, and specifically, have an opportunity to explore your political self, and where you fit into our political world.

This summer assignment should be completed and ready to turn in on the first day of school. If you are not scheduled for my class on the first day, you should come by my room (#914) and drop off the assignment before school is out on that Monday.

You will have a quiz based on this material in the first class. The assignment and the quiz will be the first 2 grades you will earn in this course. If you do not complete the summer assignment on time, you will not be able to make up the grade, and you still will be required to take the quiz on the first class day.

If you would like to receive reminders about this course during the summer and throughout the year, please go ahead and sign up by using the information below:
