Title- Skittles anyone?
Introduction- Have you ever been eating Skittles and ate a lot of one flavor or color? Have you wanted more of one flavor before? Well this experiment will help you know what color/ flavor is used more in Skittles. J
Question- What color in Original Skittles shows up the most?
Background information – Skittles
· Made commercially in 1974
· First introduced in North America in 1979
· Many flavors and colors
· Some different kinds are Crazy Cores, Fizzl’d Fruits, Original, Sour, Tropical, and Wild Berry
· Skittles contain sugar, corn syrup, and hydrogenated palm kernel oil with other ingredients
· Original flavors are grape, lemon, lime, orange, and strawberry
· Tagline for Skittles is “Taste the Rainbow”
· Red, orange, green, yellow, and purple
· Skittles are very popular
· The first one was sold in Europe in 1974
· 200,000,000 individual Skittles are made each day
· It takes 8 hours to put the candy coating on the outside of the Skittle
· 1 serving size is 1 package
· Calories-250
· Total Fat-2.5g
· Cholesterol-0mg
· Sodium-10mg
· Total Carbs-56g
· Sugar-47g
· Protein-0g
Hypothesis- My hypothesis is that the red color will show up more. 15/19 people chose red. 1/19 chose orange. 1/19 chose yellow. 1/19 chose green. 1/19 chose purple.
Materials
1. A minimum of 10 bags of Skittles
2. Pen
3. Paper
Procedure
1. Gather all materials
2. Count all the green skittles
3. Count all the red skittles
4. Count all the orange skittles
5. Count all the purple skittles
6. Count all the yellow skittles
7. Write results down
8. Continue with the other bags
Major Observations
When we were counting the bags Niki would count the Skittles one at a time.
Variables
Independent Variable- What color shows up the most?
Dependent Variable- Number of the colors
Controlled Variable- Using the same candy
Results
My results were that red had 113. Yellow had 143. Green had 112. Purple had 115. Orange had 113. I counted 10 bags of Skittles and there were 596 total. There are about 60 Skittles per bag.
Possible Application
This experiment might be useful to other people if they were wondering what color or flavor shows up most in Skittles.
Possible Causes of Error
· Different sizes of bags
· Different people counting the bags

Further Research
With further research I could of counted a lot more bags like 1000 bags or I could count other candies like M&M’s or Starburst to see if yellow is the most in all the candies.
